genderbending being mainstream, It was arguably mainstream during the '90s as well. Marilyn Manson and Placebo became popular and gained notoriety as a result of their gender-bending, androgynous appearances. Nirvana wore dresses and skirts in their music videos, concerts and photo shoots. Also, here in Australia at least, there was a 1994 movie called The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert which is about two drag queens and a transgender woman who travel across the outback in a bus, and it grossed over $29 million at the box office.

I remember there was a short phase of people wearing not just just black nail polish and eyeliner but guys who weren’t even legitimate goths could somewhat get away with black or red lipstick, androgynous clothing or semi cross dressing, funky nail polish, strongly colored hair between 1995 to mid 1999 a bit more than before and after. You had people like Dennis Rodman and rave culture normalize this. Im not just saying that because I went through a goth phase around that time. I remember teachers and school volunteers were sometimes dressing that way, yes male teachers with bright green hair, and make up snd silver nail polish who weren’t even lgbt.
