This is an idea I've had for a while. Some of you may remember reading them over on the other forum, but in case you haven't, mh had a series of "remembering" threads in which he would pick a year of his choosing and summarize the pop cultural releases/trends from then. People would post what they thought of the pop culture from that year, whether they liked it or not etc., and also share their own memories from that time. I personally really enjoyed those series of threads and I always thought they were very well thought out. I see no harm in us possibly continuing those series of threads here on Popedia. To start off, lets look back on the year that Pluto was declassified as a planet, Steve Irwin tragically died from a stingray attack, and Google purchased YouTube; 2006: The Music:If there was a year that was a perfect example of varying depending on what country you come from, it would be 2006. For that reason alone, it was a notably transitional and significant year for music. While it may not have been as successful elsewhere, over in the US, snap-rap was a seriously big deal and hits such as "Laffy Taffy", "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It" and "Do It to It" charted high on the Billboard Hot 100. In terms of pop music, the biggest stars of the day were Nelly Furtado, Fergie (who had successfully started her own solo career), Justin Timberlake and Beyonce. Rock music was all over the place, defined by subgenres such as "post" post-grunge, indie-rock, pop-rock and later, emo. In the UK, the Arctic Monkeys released their multi-platinum debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, which ultimately helped to kickstart the revival of indie-rock during the later years of the decade. Elsewhere, the Red Hot Chili Peppers achieved worldwide success as a result of two smash-hits in one year, "Dani California" and "Hey Oh (Snow)". My Chemical Romance released The Black Parade towards the end of the year. The Movies:While not regarded as one of the best years for cinema of the 2000s, 2006 was still a very significant year in film and it is notable for being one of the first years in which several of the Top-10 highest grossing films (worldwide) were animated releases. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men's Chest became the third film in cinema history to gross $1 billion worldwide, and as of 2021, it is the 35th highest-grossing film of all-time. It was a mostly forgettable year when it came to kids movie releases, however Cars and Happy Feet became huge franchises in their own right. The Games:2006 was a pivotal year in the transition to the 7th-generation of consoles, as it saw the releases of the Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 and Nintendo DS Lite. Madden NFL '07 was the best-selling game of 2006 in the United States, selling over 1.8 million units. It is also notable for having been the year prominent titles such as New Super Mario Bros., Gears of War, Saints Row, Pokemon: Diamond & Pearl, and Dead Rising were released.

Unpopular Opinion, I like 2006. 2006 is a underrated year for pop culture. The Mainstream Music of this time was great, the movies was decent.

I have to correct you on the US sides of things in 2006, Emo already caught on by late 2004 with My Chemical Romance's album dropped, Emo the modern emo you know of blew up over here. If you went to a mall in late 2004 in the United States suddenly you start seeing mall rats everywhere dressing Emo. They were all over MTV at the time When Fall Out Boy's album dropped in 2005 it added more fuel to the fire. When Black Parade dropped in 2006 over here it was not that much of a game changer as it was over there. By 2006 Emo was already a force in media, commercials and the radio 2 years prior. Now mind you this United States wise. MCR's " I am not okay" music video played on MTV in morning seemingly every 45 min at the time.

The first emo person I met out in the wild was 2005, but by 2006 I would say it was fully ubiquitous and mainstream.

Being 6 at the time I liked 2006 a lot. I remembered when the Wii first came out and it pretty much dominated the stores. I can’t remember the N64 but at least I remembered the Wii. Aside from gaming music wasn’t bad at all. In fact I consider 2006 to be in the top 5 for music during the 2000s decade. The year gets two big thumbs up for me but not quite perfection like 2007.

Another unpopular opinion: 2006 is better than and miles above 2007. 2007 felt like a burnt out 2006. 2006 was the last year malls were poppin with stores like Sam Goody and Suncoast still in business. 2006 was possibly the last great year for 2000s economy. it all started in the 2006-2007 school year aka dark and digital, a noticeable step down from the 2005-2006 year which felt 100% different lmao

I thank the late 2006 shift for them feeling different lol. Life was never the same once we crossed Friday, September 1, 2006 12:00 AM Pacific Standard Time. 2006-2007 year was miles better personally than the 2005-2006 year, however the pop culture declined and the economy showed signs of downfall.

I know it's like a joke here about the 2006 shift but it is real lol - Debut of Windows Vista - Disney Channel rebrands - WWE Raw gets a new logo and theme - TRL's ratings decline (talk of cancellation starts) the start of the catalyst of MTV's decline - Britney and K-fed file for Divorce - Debut of Smartphones blackberry Pearl - Debut of Playstation 3 and Wii (7th gen kicks off officially ) - Facebook debuts to the GP without a school e-mail - Twitter is launched (altho will not be a force until many years later) - Sam Goody & Suncoast go belly up - The WB & UPN end and The CW is launched - Malcolm in the Middle & That 70's show both end in May - Scene (Emo spin off) debuts - Timbaland bridges the gap between modern 2000s music and late 2000s electropop

Just curious what do you mean by “classic”? The answer I’m about to give might not be good. I guess what I mean by classic is when the decade was at it’s prime. This part may sound stupid, but the classic 2000s era of late 2001-mid 2006 was before life got to focused on technology and social media obsessed. It was before technology got too advanced. It was the perfect blend of old school and new school.

I know it's like a joke here about the 2006 shift but it is real lol Wow 2006 was quite transitional! 😳 😱 I wonder if 2006 would make the top three transformative years of the 2000s. 2006 was a bridge of that 2004-2005 vibe and 2007-2008 vibe. I am just going to link some videos to DRIVE my data home lol - THE FINAL moments of The WB on air( it was really sad to many teens that this network ended)That 70s show final episode( an emotional scene where Eric returns for the last episode) That is it no more that 70s show on the air guys!Final moments of Malcolm in the Middle on the air PS3 launch, we all know why this was big loland the music................Oh and by the way, I stayed back one year so I was able to experience the 2006-2007 school year instead of 2005-2006 being my last. and was able to see all the changes from a teen point view LIVE as it happened.
