Did 1994 overall have more in common with 1988 or the year 2000? In terms of technology, pop culture, fashion/hairstyles etc. I want to say 1994 has a mixture of both years. What are your thoughts about this. Whoops! I accidentally wrote 1984 in the poll question. I meant to say 1988.

What are your thoughts about this. Whoops! I accidentally wrote 1984 in the poll question. I meant to say 1988. Mid 1994 to early 1995 definitely more to the year 2000 but a significant amount of carryovers that aren’t officially dated from 1988-1993. late 1993- may/june 1994 definitely more 1988 but late 1992 would be the most appropriate year... but a few things in common with 2000 but that would been the same since since late 92/late 93 actually not much or any different since then. A few overlaps between 1993-1994 and 2000 with things like casual fashion, certain sounds in techno music and a few things within hip hop aesthetics but not as much as late 94-96, since it is mostly an early 90s world with stronger mid 90s elements than earlier.

Pop Culture: - Movies: Tie - TV Shows: 1988 - Fashion: 2000 - Music: 2000
Edit: I changed movies to a tie as 1994 did have more CGI such as Jurassic Park and animation was striving with Disney (unlike 1988).

Transportation, Japanese cars were more common. Cars were also rounder in 1994 (compared to boxy 1988 ones) and air bags were standard. With the internet, it was only a new piece of hot technology in 1994 (which most people didn't regularly use yet), in 2000, it was a common household utility. Another thing to consider, is that we had BBS in 1988 (though, it was mainly geeks that used it). If I split up computers and internet, internet would be a tie as 1994 was the first year it got any mainstream attention but, definitely not as prevalent as it was in 2000. Computers were absolutely closer to 1988, before Windows 95, before 3D graphics cards were common... computing/processing power also saw a much bigger jump between 1994 to 2000. With video games, 1994 was still mostly a 2D year and the 2D games were still very popular in arcades along side 3D games (Mortal Kombat 2, Street Fighter II Turbo and NBA Jam were among the highest grossing arcade games that year). Another thing to consider, is that 3D games did exist in 1988, they were there (also, the point that arcades were still popular in 1994 too).

Maybe a number cars look closer to 2000 or have a late 90s feel , I don’t remember a dividing line then personally. I remember parents a shiny blue Ford car we got in 1994, it was a 94 or 95 model, which could pass for a late 90s car . Public transportion ( signage, subways etc) tended to look the same from the late 80s to the early 2000s. A lot of things got an upgrade between mid 2000s and early 10s The internet existing in its proper modern form as a option which was publically advertised on tv and magazines and existence of Netscape navigator, enough websites with graphics and ones from big companies including enough media attention brings it closer to 2000 even if it wasn’t a common household item. BBS was a thing even in the early 80s. There was nothing equivalent to 3DO, even if it was later considered a flop, and amount of 3d games by 1994-1995 ( in 1988 maybe there were probably under 5 arcade games, some of which aren’t real 3d) so even if 94 has A limited amount and not as much as 95-96 it still had enough compared to barely anything earlier along with the releases of PS1 and Saturn in Japan .I did mention it was still is a mostly 2d world. PCs/Internet in 1995-1996 still werent automatically commonly used household items even after windows 95 when it first released. Windows NT/3.1 wasn’t that drastically different from windows 95, even if 95 did a lot with user friendliness and made Internet use easier. Computers from 1994 in terms of product design and certain feature we’re just starting to lean to 1995-2000. You needed an advanced card to run games like doom 2 and Warcraft, massive games franchises that have more in common/connection with what would come out in 2000. In contrast computers like the Commodore 64 were still really popular in 1988 and only certain computers were used for niche gaming or certain functions mac ( design) Amiga ( animation) , Atari St (audio) Ibm dos PCs were increasing common and used in business, home and work but it did not have as much universal go to computer status that it had in the mid 90s.

Winter 1993/1994 is more like 1988. Spring 1994 and summer 1994 is a mixture of 1988 and 2000. Spring 1994 leans 1988 and summer 1994 leans 2000. Fall 1994 is more like 2000. Second half of 1994 is more like the nearly pure and more official mid 90s but with the first substantial leanings or starting points of things associated with 2000 and late 90s/early 2000s in general and the entire period of mid 94 to mid 95 also had the last substantial early 90s holdovers in a number of ways even if it wasn’t everything. It definitely is starting to slightly lean more towards 2000 but not like it just yet. Would say mid to late 1998 is the first period to feel like vaguely like 2000 even though mid 98- mid 99 is a bit separate from the surroundings. A lot those super early late 90s vibes weren’t as clear or cohesive until late 1995- late 1996 but they definitely were there. Even the singer from soundgarden looks like he could be from 1999 in mid 94 ://media.gettyimages.com/photos/chris-cornell-during-1994-mtv-video-music-awards-at-radio-city-music-picture-id109961863?s=612x612

Starting around somewhere between 1992 - 1994, people started dressing for comfort and it's a big reason why 90s fashion hasn't dated all that much compared to the 70s and 80s. You could probably wear that now and not look that out of place, now that I think about it.

Same, I haven't voted yet but, I'm slightly leaning towards 1988 too. 1995 was absolutely a pivotal year, so much came out and there were so many milestones and achievements in the tech world.

You could probably wear that now and not look that out of place, now that I think about it. Fashion is only one aspect. A good portion of starting points in music subcultures ( explosion of mainstream punk - green dat playing Woodstock, start of trip hop, early nu metal etc) tech ( first proper year of the Internet) , extreme sports ( skateboarding getting mainstream and the first year of the x games), series overlaps with 95-97( reboot, ER, friends) including earliest millennials becoming teens, a having a bit more of separate identity than Gen xers, growing negative stigma about grunge after cobains death and the earliest post grunge hits by moist, bush and our lady peace by the end of the year, more plain dresses down normal 90s vibes, fashion like ( spiky hair first popping up here and there, baggy jeans getting more mainstream, bell bottom jeans, 70s influences increasing etc ) and push late 94 closer to 2000, I think you agreed that late 94 has a lot in common with latter 90s for ages. A more appropriate period would be any year from 1997 to 1999 as 2000 was slowly transitioning to the early 2000s past the early part. I would yes you could say that about fashion but mid 1992- early 1994 fashion and culture still had heavier traces of 1990-early 92 still blended into what was in style even if they weren’t always predominant whereas late 94 to mid 96 had much less. Even this music video by Madonna in 1994 could be made in 2000:

I have seen 1988-1994/1995 being dubbed as the New Jack Swing era. New Jack Swing era is really late 1987 to 1993 maybe early 1994. It was past its time in 1995 and 1996 even though you could hear some influence and maybe a few songs.

A shoe design from around latter 1994 that looks straight outta 1999-2000 that would have been inconceivable from 1990 to 1993/1994.
