music has changed which is funny lol it's transitioning currently Exactly, music is different already. Compare the top 10 songs this week to the songs of the same week in 2017, 2018, or even 2019 and you’ll see a difference. Of course there are still some late 10s sounding songs just like there were 2000s sounding songs in 2011, 90s sounding songs in 2001, and so on. Like you said music is in a transition Top 10 week of June 12, 2021 1. Butter - BTS 2. Good 4 U - Olivia Rodrigo 3. Levitating - Dua Lipa 4. Leave The Door Open - Silk Sonic 5. Save Your Tears - The Weeknd 6. Peaches - Justin Bieber 7. Kiss Me More - Doja Cat 8. Deja Vu - Olivia Rodrigo 9. Astronaut in the Ocean - Masked Wolf 10. Montero (Call Me By Your Name) - Lil Nas X Week of June 15, 2019 1. Old Town Road - Lil Nas X 2. Bad Guy - Billie Eillish 3. Talk - Khalid 4. I Don’t Care - Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber 5. Sucker - Jonas Brothers 6. Wow. - Post Malone 7. Sunflower - Swae Lee & Post Malone 8. Suge - DaBaby 9. Dancing With a Stranger - Normani & Sam Smith 10. Sweet But Psycho - Ava Max Most songs in the top ten today don’t sound like 2010s songs to me unlike 2019 There was barely any genuine 2000s sounding songs in 2011. Maybe songs that sound like 2009 but that's about it. Anyway, there are songs from the 2021 list that dont sound really core 2010s. Butter is just a disco throwback, that trend was a thing since the 90s. Good 4 U definitely won't come out of the 2010s that's for sure, since it's a callback to the 90s/00s. Levitating has a bouncy groove that won't really fit with the late 2010s zeitgeist. Songs like Dancing With a Stranger in 2019 has a groove but it's heavily reverbed and subdued. Leave The Door Open is just a throwback to the early 70s soul sound, nothing very 2020s or even 2010s about it. Save Your Tears is a synthwave track, which is a late 2010s trend so it won't sound out of place in the late 2010s. Peaches sounds like the 2020s to me. A nice, chill, thumpy R&B track. Same goes for Kiss Me More but more groovier. I honestly don't know what Deja Vu is but I put it into the 2020s category. Astronaut In The Ocean is a trap inspired song but doesn't sound like it's from 2017. I'll just put it in the late 2010s/early 2020s hybrid. Montero is very early 2020s as well. The guitar infused beat trend in hip hop is a big factor of the early 2020s. Mood, Rockstar, Rapstar, and Lemonade are examples of that. The songs from 2019 that sound a bit dated is Talk, I Don't Care, Sucker, Wow, Dancing With a Stranger, and Sweet But Psycho.

It was made in 2019, that's for sure. It's a happy party song that wouldn't fit in 2017 but would fit in just fine in 2019 imo, it's not a 2020s song at all. I noticed many songs from 2017-19 already sounded dated back then, like Sweet but Psycho and Hight Hopes. Looking back now, 2018 was a slump year for music because all the music trends from the mid 2010s were starting to die out and the newers trends (new new disco, dance pop, synthwave) hadn't started yet. I mean, the biggest hit songs from 2018 were Meant to be, girls like you, perfect and Gods Plan, those songs (aside from Gods plan) have 0 personality, and Meant to be already sounds dated.

2012 is very much a dated year, especially considering stuff like Blockbuster and the PS2 still existed. Same with 2013, at least maybe up to June or so.

I thought Levitating came out in late 2020? Just looked it up and while it was on her March 2020 album, the single released on October 1. IMO 2018 was a great year for music, slump or not. Big improvement from 2017. 2018 might even be equal to 2019 IMO if not a little lower (though I actually like trap, which might be different from some others here.) 2020 definitely beats them both, though.

No one was playing ps2 in 2012 tho, and no store sold ps2 games, the only time a store would sell a ps2 game is if Fifa 2013 came out or something, also Ps2 being around more has to do with Brazil and not the United States. Blockbuster was pretty much dead by 2012 as well as most of their stores were gone. The playstation 2 brand was swiftly discontinued in early 2007 with the last remaining game promotion going to God of War 2

Dial up connections are still being made but that doesn't mean it is a thing the majority of people use

This pandemic has people thinking 2019 is closer to 2010 than 2021 lmao. I’m not gonna argue that COVID didn’t change culture but people are seriously overestimating how different 2019 is. Last year I got into an argument with someone who tried telling me that because of COVID, we are already in 2020’s culture. I told them that’s not how culture works, and I basically said we’re in a transition era. But this person actually believed that the day we began lockdown was the very start of 2020’s culture, and that there were basically no 2010’s influences left. Like I’m sorry but that’s not how culture works. Culture isn’t a day to night change and it does require a transition period. Yet I got called out for thinking that lmao. Yeah we are still pretty much in a transition era. I think the latest this transition will go is until November 2021. I keep telling people who ask "when is the shift" guesss whattttttt you are in it right now

September and October 2013 are in between dated and not that dated. November and December 2013 are not that dated. To me, late 2013 - mid 2015 is semi-dated. The fashion and music from those years really would stick like a sore thumb if they were around today.

Especially late 2015 - mid 2016, when it had more 2010s cheese and may probably lean semi-dated to some extent.

It’s 2019 as it was part of the trump era, music was a lot slower and downbeat than it is today and it also predated zoom and masks and while alot of people will stop wearing a mask and go back to in person school/work, there will still be a sizeable amount of people who will refuse to give up the opportunity to work from home and wearing a mask as well.
