So I was just wondering, what do you guys think is the most recent year thats obviously/visibly dated? Like if you were to look at a picture from that year, you could easily tell it couldn't be from 2021.
Tbh just looking back through my camera roll and seeing people's outfits, cellphones etc, I would say 2013, maybe 2014. 2012 is quite clearly dated imo.
2016 and 2017 however, are obviously not part of the current era, yet visually they are not that distinguishable from today. I would say 2015 is probably in this category aswell.

2016 and 2017 are not very dated but there are noticeable differences from today. 2015 is kinda dated but not really like a another world from today. 2014 and below is clearly outdated for sure.

Take music out of the equation and it's 2019.

Fashion and technology: 2012 and 2013. A lot of people were just giving up their slider phones for smartphones in 2012/13, and said smart phones even look very very dated.
Music: 2017 with bits of 2018 now as well. Not only did charting music sound a lot different from now, but TikTok (a huge part of music culture in modern day for sure) didn't even exist until late 2018.
Everything else (daily life, politics): 2019 for sure. COVID changed everything in our daily lives, and to remove 2021 from 2019 even further we have a new president.

Impossible to be 2019 since the dividing line still hasn’t been fully drawn, culture is 80 percent identical, maybe by late 2021 or 2022 or later but not there yet.
2017-2018 a tiny bit but not.
2016 little more not not
2013-2014. To some extent
2012-2013. Officially dated

2019 is not dated. COVID 19 started in 2019. COVID did not blow up until March 2020 with lockdowns, quarantine, cases skyrocketing. I do not think 2019 will be dated until 2023 or 2024. 2019 is when TikTok, Bilie Eilish and AirPods blow up, all trends going strong today. Disney Plus kicked off in late 2019. 2009 did not seem dated until mid 2015. 1999 seemed recent in the early to maybe mid 2000s. 1999 did not get dated until late 2004. I believe mid 2015-now is recent and late 2013-early 2015 is a cusp between dated and recent. Late 2013 is when the world gets closer to resembling today. From 2010-mid 2013, smartphones are rising in popularity, but are not common or dominating yet as some people had slider phones. In 2010-2012, Cable TV held onto relevancy and it is before Netflix began to make original shows and movies. Blockbuster is alive from 2010-mid 2013. The last MacBook with a CD/DVD drive is made in June 2012 and sold until October 2016. Skeuomorphism coexisted with flat design from 2010-mid 2013, but flat design started dominating in late 2013 thanks to iOS 7. Now that I think about it, the early 2010s are a unique and transitional era, but retained late 2000s influences which did not vanish until late 2013. 2010-mid 2013 are dated. Years like 2012 are dated as hell. I think it's stylistically closer to the mid-late 2000s(because it literally is) than today. Take a look at this video that was filmed in July 2012. You got some smartphones, which are probably dated now anyway. You also see digital cameras being used. The fashion is clearly different than what it is today. You can see that people are walking up to the fake celebrity and not doing selfies, just regular photos. If it was 2014, they would be doing tons of selfies with the dude. Even the 2013 videos looks dated:

The late 2010s do not feel dated to me not yet not even 2017 feels dated. 2013-2014 right now are the two most recent years that feel dated to me. I can’t imagine hearing a new song that sounds like it was from 2014 being played on mainstream radio today. Back then there was more EDM type of music rather than trap which was barely popular and was mostly underground. Not only that but hipster culture is dead whereas it was very popular back in those two years.

Even the 2013 videos looks dated: I agree. 2012 has a lot more common with the mid to late 2000s than it does with today. Honestly 2012 is kind of a different world. 2012 is barely removed from the late 2000s. 2012 looks dated in 2021, maybe not as dated as 2002 in 2011, but still dated. 2012 has iOS 6 which is a skeuomorphic iPhone user face. 2012 is the last full year of any late 2000s influences. 2012 is the last year of Obama’s first term. Now that I think of it, even most of 2013 has some minor late 2000s influences, but that didn’t vanish until later that year, so even most of 2013 is also dated. The PS2 stopped being produced in January 2013, but still produced games until September 2013. Most of 2013 still felt early 2010s, despite being core 2010s already. Late 2013 is when the mid 2010s arrived, around September-November with iOS 7, GTA V, PS4 debuts. I’ll definitely catch a lot of flack for saying all this. Around 2013 is when the transition to mid 2010s begin. 2012 is the last full year of early 2010s ElectroPop culture. 2012 is identical to late 2009-2011. 2012 is not a transitional year at all as people on this board like to argue. 2011 and 2011 are too early for the core 2010s to begin. 2012 is also pre-Vine. Late 2013 is the infancy of today’s culture. You’re so right. In 2012, people are taking regular photos. Just 2 years later in 2014, they’d be taking selfies. In 2012, streaming is limited to YouTube. Digital cameras are huge in 2012 as smartphone or other cellphones did not have a great camera. Misconception about ps2, ps2 stopped being supported shortly after ps3 came out in 2006, there were still games like FIFA and what not, but for the most part it got no support. In Brazil they were still pumping out games tho. No one I knew was playing ps2 in 2010,2011 or even 2012

Here's my reasons for why I think 2019 is dated (in most aspects) - COVID-19 didn't even exist until like November or December 2019, and didn't even enter the public concious until January 2020 before obviously skyrocketing in March 2020. To me, walking into my local restaurants and actually seeing people enjoying themselves and dining inside is dated. I miss it so much. I wish 2020 and 2021 were the same as 2019, but it's just not the case - especially 2021, with a different president on TOP of the pandemic, a pandemic that is now ingrained in modern society too, despite not even existing in 2019. Music and technology in 2019 aren't that dated except for some examples ("Old Town Road" actually sounds dated to me, as well as a few other 2019 pop songs), but politics, social life, and actual culture as we perceive it day-to-day is very dated. Something that didn't even exist back then is now part of our daily lives - and if tomorrow I woke up on June 6, 2019, I'd feel a shock. That's how ingrained COVID restrictions post-2020 is in today's culture. 2019 definitely has more pop cultural connections to now than 2017-18, but in no way does that mean it's not dated - because in the grand scheme of things literally everything in our day-to-day changed in 2020. Not minor pop cultural shifts like 2019 itself had, but actual life. 2019-2021 is one of the BIGGEST two year jumps in my opinion.

2019 isn’t even close to being dated. IMO not even 2018 is dated yet. Maybe the politics from then feels a little different since Trump was president but that’s about it.

I think Old Town Road could be released today and people wouldn't notice it was "dated", tho, i do think that that song is aging FAST, in 5 years it will probably be dated like Party Rock Anthem lol.
