I decided to make a list of years and/or school years that don’t really seem to fit into an overall era and rather stand out in their own. Not to say that these years don’t belong to a certain era but they can be pretty tricky to define. Feel free to add any years you think would qualify
2019 - an obvious one. While still a late 2010s year, it doesn’t really fit in with 2017-18, but at the same time it doesn’t fit with 2020-21 that much either. Lizzo and Billie Eillish became really big this year and seemed to have peaked in 2019. AirPods are common but so are wired headphones. Trump is still president but Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are being talked about a lot as candidates. Covid is birthed at the end of this year but overwhelming unknown to the world until the beginning of 2020. A lot of us call it a “proto 2020s year” or a “what if” year. Definitely feels like a fever dream in 2021
2008-09 - The 2008-09 school year was a very transitional year as we all know. Bush was president for the first part of that school year while Obama was president for the second part. MySpace and Facebook are simultaneously popular. Electropop is out but not dominating just yet, and most music is still pretty 2000s. It’s a weird fusion or pit-stop between late 2000s and early 2010s, although still a late 2000s cultural school year
1999-2000 - The peak of Y2K which was a mix of late 90s elements and early 00s elements. The music of this era sounds pretty ambiguous to me with some songs that could sound either 90s or 00s but most fall somewhere in between. Still lingering Gen X culture but millennial culture had just began to dominate. I really don’t know what era I would put this school year in other than just pure Y2K
2002 - We’ve talked a lot about this year lately. Post Y2K but pre core 2000s. After 9/11 but before the Iraq War. Pre-Mcbling, Pre- MySpace, Pre-Crunk, and Pre-emo, but still isn’t really much of a 90s year at all. The 2000s identity had been formed at this time but didn’t really come into itself yet. It’s a gray area. Just a plain early 2000s year.

I honestly don't know why some people put 2008-2009 the beginning of the early 2010s. MySpace was used quite a lot despite Facebook playing tug-o-war. Bush was still in office in late 2008. Finding people with an iPhone is like finding a needle in a haystack. A lot of the music still screams late/core 00s such as Live Your Life, Jai Ho, Miss Independent, My Life Would Suck, and Gives You Hell. Heck, even Lady Gaga's 2008 singles Just Dance and Poker Face sounds a bit dated by 2011, just compare those songs with Born This Way.

2002 and 2019 share the same calendar. 1999-2000 and 2008-2009 numerology wise share similarities. I agree with the list, especially 2019.

Looking back at 2008-09, it just seems very late 2000s to me and not too much early 2010s. 2009-10 is the first school year that could be considered early 2010s imo with smartphones getting more popular, Bad Romance and Tik Tok being popular songs, iPad release etc.

I hope they never come back

By 1999-2000, Eminem was already a superstar, and SpongeBob was popular. At the same time, boy bands were at their peak in popularity, and everybody was using Windows 98. Nu metal also blew up during this time.

I'd definitely put 2009-2010 in here. Despite some early 2010s influences, it doesn't FEEL like an early 2010s year. At the same time, late 2000s influences are already on the decline. I remember things like Club Penguin and rhythm games weren't cool anymore, but Minecraft wasn't popular yet (if you remember going back to 2007-2008, both things were ABSOLUTELY huge at the time). Instead, this school year was defined by gimmicks like 3D movies and Farmville. It seemed we wanted to enter a new era already, but didn't actually have anything good to enter it with.

Honestly, I'm just gonna say it, 2020 should absolutely be here. Why? COVID lockdowns, not being allowed to go to theaters, virtual learning, last year Trump was president, etc. I mean, just the fact "early pandemic nostalgia" is a thing is an indication of just how unique 2020 was. Of course, this will vary based on how COVID impacted your community, but in my case, starting in November 2020, you could once again participate in school face-to-face. That alone gives me a very different impression of 2020 compared to later and ESPECIALLY earlier years.

Depends on your region/country, the following things happening in Late 08 - up to Spring 2009- Economy crashes in Fall 08 - Lady Gaga becomes a house hold name in the span of 6 months - Red One becomes the producer for everyone - Android comes out - Marvel Cinematic Universe is established - Toonami kicked off the air - Obama becomes president - Circuit City and KB Toys both end - Rise in Electropop - Katy Perry becomes a house hold name - Facebook inches closer to beating Myspace ( close to being neck and neck) - Hipster rises fast in late 08 - Scene declines slowly in Spring 2009 - Grindr launches - Twitter blows up Q4 2008 and becomes officially mainstream by Spring 2009 - Glee airs its first episode - MTV cancels TRL and replaces it with It's on with Alexa Chung - Hulu launches

To me, the transition from the 2000s to the 2010s was mostly a result of the rise of streaming and smartphones. In pop culture, Obama being president and the decline of emo/scene culture and rise of hipsters is another big thing.
