1990 (before Nirvana shook up the world) 1993 (before Friends airs and the internet explodes) 1998 (before Columbine shooting) 2000 (before 9/11/2001, before the 2000s start developing their identity) 2002 (before Iraq War, calmest year of the 2000s post 9/11/2001, before the core 2000s) 2007 (before Great Recession, last core 2000s year) 2013 (first core 2010s year, before toxic politics (SJW vs Alt Right war, cancel culture, liberals vs conservatives, Karens, Kevins, etc)) 2019 (before COVID) For that particular one I’d probably say that goes to 1994 since in 95 that’s when Windows 95 came and then the internet really took off That’s what I originally thought. According to slashpop, they say that the internet becomes more mainstream by late 1994.

I sworn I saw that website in one of your late 1996 atmosphere threads. 😮 yeah and I also remember school trying to get us on yahooligans around 96 as well, it was the kids version of Yahoo

Oh god Yahooligans… schools were adamant about that one. Did anyone’s school make you go to funbrain.com too? I could had cared less about that site. 🙄 it was like the only two sites approved by school computer labs lol.

Wouldn’t say that. A lot of people had computers by then. Also, Internet was officially mainstream by late 94, just bigger 1995-1996 and 1996-1997.

I think email first gets coined or becomes a thing in 1994. Email actually dates back to the 70s, but much like the internet itself, it was not available to the public. Back in the late 90s and early 00s, everyone used either Hotmail or Yahoo Mail. Gmail launched in the mid-2000s, and was initially thought to be an April Fool joke but now everyone has a Gmail.

I think email first gets coined or becomes a thing in 1994. It’s starts becoming more used for sure. Even earlier in the early 90s (1991-1993/94) it starts increasing with AOL, conpuserve and prodigy but in very limited way, but still there, even in the 80s to a slightly lesser degree with different online programs you can access with a modem on an 80s computer and places like universities or networking companies. In late 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 there is surge in the general public making email addresses and it starts becoming more of the norm among businesses and companies where computers are primarily used, including those running websites and certain companies in general. In 1996-mid 1998 is when there is more of a surge in email among the general but not everyone has it yet, it’s not mandatory or required but becoming more popular. In late 1998 to early 2000 is when email becomes a common thing to have. 1999-2000 is when everyone feels more obligated to make one and becomes the norm to have one, 1998-1999 was similar but to a lesser degree. 2000-2001 it’s mostly common.

I need to make an entire thread about 2015. In retrospect it was a hella optimistic time and arguably the best year of the 2010s.
