Inspired by John Titor's thread about months, what were some years that were relatively peaceful before a very tumultuous year? Here are my votes: -1990 (pre-Gulf War, Nirvana, and USSR collapse) -1998 (pre-Columbine and Y2K scare) -2000 (pre-9/11) -2002 (pre-Iraq War) -2007 (pre-Recession) -2010 (before the Arab Spring and Occupy protests) -2013 (before Gamergate, the SJW vs alt-right conflict, ISIS becoming powerful, the Ferguson protests, and the Ebola epidemic) -2015 (before Trump and Brexit) -2019 (THE ULTIMATE CALM BEFORE THE STORM YEAR, pre-COVID and George Floyd)

Was 2019 really a calm year? Don't think so tbh, although, looking back now, 2019 was a damn good year

1960-1963 was "calm before the storm" because the revolutions of 60s hadn't kicked in yet and Kennedy wasn't killed until very late 63.
The 1890s (gay 90s) were the ultimate "Calm before the storm" years, so many revolutions happened in the subsequent decades, there was even 1 world war, a pandemic and the popularization of cars

I turned 21 that year. Plus I had a bunch of fun memories. I am desperately trying to hold on to that spirit and vibe. I feel like I am still in that wave.

1990 (before Nirvana shook up the world) 1993 (before Friends airs and the internet explodes) 1998 (before Columbine shooting) 2000 (before 9/11/2001, before the 2000s start developing their identity) 2002 (before Iraq War, calmest year of the 2000s post 9/11/2001, before the core 2000s) 2007 (before Great Recession, last core 2000s year) 2013 (first core 2010s year, before toxic politics (SJW vs Alt Right war, cancel culture, liberals vs conservatives, Karens, Kevins, etc)) 2019 (before COVID) Citing nirvana as the only reason why 1990 was a "stormy" year is kinda of ingenious lmao. So many things happened in 1991, not just nirvana lol. For once, 1991 saw the fall of the soviet union and several other communist countries, 1991 also saw the collapse of the japanese economy (they still haven't recovered).

The 1990s are shit for Japan. A lot of fuckery happened in 1991 and 1992. 2020 has the same calendar as 1992.

Was 2019 really a calm year? Don't think so tbh, although, looking back now, 2019 was a damn good year Compared to 2020 it absolutely was. No pandemic, George Floyd protests, or controversial election. A year doesn't even have to be peaceful in order to be a calm before the storm year, it just has to be MORE peaceful than the following year, and that's absolutely true of 2019. And IMO it isn't anywhere near as tumultuous as 2016-2018 were with all the mass shootings, terrorist attacks, Brexit, and the Trump election

Afterwards, you had the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy's assassination, and the Gulf of Tonkin act all happening one after the other, and the tumultuous 60s began.

Both years saw the election of Democrat presidents.
