ItsMichael mc98 2014 was the start of Cold War II (Crimean Annexation) and when ISIS became a major threat. It was also the start of gamergate, BLM protests escalated following Ferguson, and the GOP winning back full control of Congress was a sign of things to come regarding the political climate. 2014's twin year is better suited as 2015, not 2013. Culturally 2015 also felt very similar to 2014. FNAF, Vine, MLG videos, Filthy Frank, GoAnimate. It had that progressive Obama-era vibe with the toxic politics of the Trump era.

Technically Avatar and Angry Birds came out in 2009 but they are really more 2010 trends 2010 felt very different with all the electro house, dubstep, Adventure Time, bronies, Windows 7 being everywhere, the rise of hipsters, etc. I feel old that Angry Birds was released in the 2000s, but barely.

Not that I got to experience them first-hand, but I have always felt as though 1995 & 1996 go together well as a pair of years. I think it's because they were both heavily caught up in the Britpop hype of the mid '90s and Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill was such an overwhelmingly huge success that it pretty much defined both years. Also, '95 and '96 were the infancy days of the internet, wherein the "internet" term was quickly catching on with the public, however the majority of people still did not have access to it and were still somewhat confused by what the net was capable of.
Some other years which I feel make a good pairing:
* 1963 & 1964 * 1999 & 2000 * 2004 & 2005 * 2007 & 2008 * 2014 & 2015

I have this feeling 2021 and 2022 will be "twin" years, unless we see some BIG thing happen in late '21 Given the recent Afghanistan takeover, the possibility is definitely there for a big thing in late 2021.

1999-2000 are absolutely twin years. I agree. These were the years of Poke-Mania, the dot-com bubble and all the hype around it, everything being named Millennium or 2000, the Dreamcast, peak futuristic aesthetics, boy bands like Backstreet Boys and NSync. These are the quintessential Y2K years for a reason. A potential dark horse could be 2003-2004. Both years share the distinction of essentially being early/mid 2000s hybrid years. Both Need for Speed and Tony Hawk had “Underground” games from those years. The two SpongeBob licensed games Battle for Bikini Bottom and the Movie Game came out in both years respectively. This seems to be a similar time frame for gaming, which could stem from the fact that, at least in my opinion, this timeframe was really the peak of 6th Gen gaming, after everyone stopped playing 5th Gen consoles like the PS1 and N64, but before E3 2005 and any 7th Gen consoles were released or announced. Pixar was also at their absolute peak since you had Finding Nemo and The Incredibles being released, both among their most popular films and also in my opinion some of their best.

Speaking of gaming, I really think that 1992/1993 and 1997/1998 could also serve as twin years. With 1992/1993 being the peak of Sega and grunge, Sonic the Hedgehog merch EVERYWHERE and he was more popular than Mario. 1997/1998 meanwhile was the absolute peak of 5th gen gaming, being after the end of the 16-bit era following the release of the Nintendo 64, but before the release of the Dreamcast and thus the start of the 6th gen. Perhaps as a result of this, you'll find both years are often regarded by gaming publications as being some of the greatest years in gaming history. 1997 and 1998 also feel incredibly similar in terms of both the music, movies, and TV shows that were popular in those years, as well as having this sort of Gen X/millennial transitional vibe.

2008 - 2009
2015 - 2016
2020 - 2021
I consider twin years to be years where the second is like a sequel to the first one. Like 2009 inaugurating obama, electropop becoming the dominant genre in music and the recession ending. Which are things that started in 2008.

Unpopular opinion, but 2021 actually doesn’t feel like 2020. Biden is now president, more and more places are abandoning mask requirements (I don’t even have to wear a mask anymore) and places are now allowing crowds. Every single person that I know in the C/O 2021 all had a completely normal graduation with no masks required. 2021 has a more optimistic feel to it, and it genuinely feels like we are finally getting past the Trump politics era. yuppp, we had a completely normal graduation no masks required. even tho we had to wear masks at school my senior year was normal for over half the school year

In 2015 things felt overly liberal. Gay marriage bill was passed, transgender people were talked about now, PC culture permeated into everything. 2016 is when the conservative backlash happened with brexit and trumps election and conservative/reactionary sentiments becoming mainstream.
