i don’t think they’re that different except for the ukraine situation Everyone was talking about COVID in 2021. In 2022, people are talking more about fucking monkeypox. 2020-2021 was the COVID era. We are now in the post-COVID era, or at least, transitioning into it.

As far as years that can’t be twinned, one that comes to mind for me is 2013. 2013 is a year that is transistional between the early and mid 2010s. 2013 was the year Minecraft was at its peak, you still had YouTubers like Smosh and RWJ being popular, but you also had the likes of PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. Skeuomorphism was dying down, but not completely dead. The PS4 and Xbox One came out, but most people were playing PS3 and Xbox 360. If I had to pick which year it feels more similar to, I’d say 2012, since you did have Smosh being the most subscribed YouTuber for most of the year, and the fact 7th Gen consoles were still popular and relevant, and iOS still had a skeuomorphic look for most of the year. But I wouldn’t call 2013 a twin of 2012 because it still feels quite different. I also don’t think 1994 can be twinned either. Doesn’t feel similar enough to either 1993 (an early 90s year) or 1995 (mid 90s with incoming Y2K and late 90s influence). 1994 is pretty much just peak 90s.

Not that I got to experience them first-hand, but I have always felt as though 1995 & 1996 go together well as a pair of years. I think it's because they were both heavily caught up in the Britpop hype of the mid '90s and Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill was such an overwhelmingly huge success that it pretty much defined both years. Also, '95 and '96 were the infancy days of the internet, wherein the "internet" term was quickly catching on with the public, however the majority of people still did not have access to it and were still somewhat confused by what the net was capable of. Some other years which I feel make a good pairing: * 1963 & 1964 * 1999 & 2000 * 2004 & 2005 * 2007 & 2008 * 2014 & 2015 You can add Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness in this category too. The fact the band appeared in The Simpsons in a 1996 episode certainly helped. In addition to britpop, third wave ska was also big largely in the time frame mentioned, with bands like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, No Doubt, Sublime, and Reel Big Fish. Gangsta rap also arguably peaked then too, with 2pac at his height in popularity, and he heavily defined both 1995 and 1996.
