Looking back, 2014-2016 was a very JAM-PACKED era. Filthy Frank, montage parodies, Five Nights at Freddys, GoAnimate, Undertale, Twenty One Pilots, To Pimp a Butterfly, #TheDress, Pokémon Go, cringe compilations, commentary channels (LeafyIsHere, Pyrocynical), hipsters, Steven Universe, Gamergate, the 2016 election, 2016 Summer Olympics, Vine, Miiverse, The Force Awakens, Overwatch, Flappy Bird, The Lego Movie, Windows 10, Inside Out. I could go on and on. However, in 2017 basically ALL of those things died off, including Vine which got shut down, so you ended up with a very hollow vibe. Only a few things really defined this era to me like Fortnite, fidget spinners, PUBG, battle royale games in general, tide pods, peak-era Rick and Morty and its resulting backlash, as well as A LOT of shootings and celebrity deaths. It just doesn’t seem to have its own vibe. In a weird way Trump’s inauguration felt like the last truly exciting thing to happen before the dull nothingness of the late 2010s came. Fortnite was cool but didn’t have the same kinda impact the way FNAF, Undertale, or even Minecraft did. When TikTok launched in late 2018 that’s when things started to become exciting again for better or worse. 2019 felt exciting the way 2017-2018 did not. It had more of its own identity. But what do you guys think? Do you think 2017-2018 was kinda an empty era, or am I just seeing things differently?

2017-2018 school year was the WORST ever. This school year had NOTHING except Fortnite and tide pods. It had a depressing vibe with all the mass shootings and Parkland. I NEVER wanna revisit this school year

2017 was more empty than 2018 lmao
2018 was a better version of 2017
Overall they both suck, I will stick 2015 right in there as dogsh*t 2010s years, the only think positive I can think about 2017 and 2018 is Hipster was winding down slowly.

Little Nightmare came out in 2017, i remember people hyped up for see you again to overtake Gangnam Style, but then despacito came out of nowhere.
2018 was the real slump, 2018 was the worst year of the 10s imo
Edit: God Of War 5 came out in '18 tho, i remember it being big

2018 was the emptiest year of the 2010s more than 2017 and 2019

Neither are particularly memorable for me. I like components of the aesthetic but most of what was new got more exciting by 2019.

2017 isn’t memorable at all to me. Too many tragic events happened that year and I just don’t ever want to revisit that year. 2018 is definitely an improvement from 2017 personally but culturally these two years are very bland. At least 2019 had some sparks to it.

Agreed. It was honestly a very boring and depressing year. There were shooting threats at my school after Parkland, Tide pods were sadly a thing, Fortnite started to pop off in February, mumble rap/emo trap was still popular (XXX, Lil Pump, Lil Peep, Juice WRLD, etc.), and post-ironic/ear rape memes were at their peak ("do you know de wae", "somebody touched my spaghet!", etc). General pop music (that wasn't Cardi/Drake/Post Malone) in 2018 was basically nonexistent besides Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello (who I never liked), and a bit of Dua Lipa ("One Kiss").

The 2017 half of 2016-2017 sucked balls. 2017-2018 sucked dick, the worst school year of college. 2018-2019 was an improvement, especially the 2019 half, the best school year of college. 2019 is the best year of my life. Hopefully we can all agree 2017 was awful. Even if it was packed it wasn't with anything good. Protests, mass shootings, Jake Paul, and terrible movies defined 2017.

Cardi B can kiss my ass LMAO To be fair the mid-2010s did have dumb challenges too like the fucking fire challenge (I'm not kidding, this was a real thing), but we did also have more lighthearted stuff like the Ice Bucket Challenge IMO it being post-Vine and pre-TikTok plus all the protests and shootings played a huge role in giving this era nothing but a depressing identity.

Do you think 2017 is another dark and digital year? 2017 has an off beat vibe. I call 2017 demonic and satanic. I agree 2015 is dogshit. kind of, both different years that felt nothing alike, 2017 has that same " dogshit this a dark off beat year" vibe
