On one of the threads on here, many or some users mentioned that the gap from 2010 to 2021 is small compared to the gap from 1999 to 2010. I recall thinking in 2011, that the year 2000 is disconnected from the present world. I can't say that about the year 2010 in 2021. What I can say is that even though 2010 was already early 2010s, it was still barely removed from the late 2000s.
Dated aspects of 2010: -I think most of 2010 was before trap started gaining popularity. -Digital cameras and feature phones like Blackberries, sliders, maybe Razr still in use. -First three quarters were pre-Instagram. -Pre-Snapchat -Facebook popular with teens -Blockbuster and Borders still in business -Hollywood Videos still open for the 1st half. -Almost no trace of current political tensions that have dominated since the mid 2010s to now. -Pre-BLM -Pre-MeToo -Pre-Zoom -Great Recession effects still lingering -Electropop -Skinny, tight, highlighter, neon fashion -Scene looks -Skeuomorphism -iPhones' had the classic interface -Cable TV still the way to watch TV -Radio still the way to listen to music -Print and physical media like DVD's, blue ray, magazines and newspapers still used -Binge watching culture not huge. -Pre-COVID -Last full year of the Iraq War -Trump was only known as "The Apprentice" host, not someone who'd run for president. -Obama was president -Q1 2010 was pre-iPad.
Recent aspects of 2010: -Touch screen phones and tablets start to gain traction -Instagram debuts that October -Hollywood Videos out of business by the 2nd half -Trap starts gaining steam that fall -1st full year of YouTube having thumbs up and down rating system -Twitter popularity -Streaming starts to become popular -iPad drops that 2nd quarter -7th generation gaming. 8th and so far 9th generation gaming are similar to 7th generation gaming with a few tweaks here and there.
I guess some or many of these could apply to 2011-2014 to an extent, give or take some or many bullets.
Verdict: 2010 is mostly dated, but no where near retro like 2000-2003, maybe 2004-2005 to an extent.

Simply too much stuff happened from 2001 - 2008/2009 which makes it feel like a lifetime. Could you imagine making a movie about the 2000s eras ? Episode I - 2000 - Spring/Summer 2001 Episode II - Fall 2001 - Early 2003 Episode III - Fall 2004 - Summer 2006 Episode IV - Fall 2006 - Fall 2009 and maybe a Disney + series about the fake mid 2000s ( April 2003 - July/August 2004) lol

I guess we could say that about 2011-2014 to an extent, but 2010 sticks out to me more because 2010 literally happened right after the 2000s ended. I bet in 2000, 1990 looked foreign, outdated and disconnected from the present. Somebody who dresses like they're from 1990 or 2000 in 2000 or 2010 would stick out like a sore thumb, look out of place and unhip. I don't know if I can say that about 2010 in 2020/2021. Too much stuff happened from 2001-2008/2009 which made 2000 and 2010 feel 13-15 years apart. 2000s were a wild, eventful ride that I experienced my childhood in. I couldn't imagine making a movie about the 2000s eras. It would go on and on. I agree with the episodes. Funny how you put the fake mid 2000s as a Disney+ series lol. From January 2000 to December 2009 honestly, I am being honest with you, felt like 16 years had gone by. Maybe I will have to do some faux movie posters of the 2000s as Star Wars episodes lol

I felt the same way. I was an infant or toddler in 2000, not even in pre-school yet. My sister wasn't born yet. I can't remember 2000 that well or at all. 2000 had Clinton as president. Many see 2000 as a late 1990s extension. I see 2000 as Y2K era, not 1990s anymore, but before the 2000s became the 2000s culturally. 2000 did pave some things for the 2000s, Bush election, Dotcom bubble burst leading to early 2000s recession, PS2 release (blew up in late 2001), reality TV. Other than those things, 2000 seems mostly disconnected from the 2000s. In 2009, I was a pre-teen about to leave elementary school. 2009 already had Obama, the 1st Black president. Society felt like it came a long ways or made a leap, but still ways to go. 2009 was debatably late 2000s or early 2010s culturally. 2009 seemed more connected to the 2000s than 2000 did. 2010 mostly seemed connected to the 2010s, but stands out more compared to other early 2010s years. Lol that would be cool! Late 2009 felt 2010s imo it already had a lot of the ingredients. Portion of 1999 had more in common with the 2000s than the real 90s.

It's sort of odd to use "Pre-COVID" as a signifier a year is dated, like 2010 was 10 years before the COVID era started and we're almost two years into it. It's that dated lol

About a 13-15 year difference between those eras. 2010 and 2019 are both very 2010s in their own ways. Different from eachother sure, but still unmistakably 2010s.

Things that are the same about 2010 & 2019: - Smartphones are popular both years - Facebook, Twitter and Instagram exist with really only the first two really being popular in 2010 but Instagram was released in that year nonetheless - The infinity saga of the MCU is a thing. RDJ as Iron Man was already becoming a cultural icon all the way back in 2010 - Flat screen TVs are common in both years - Artists like Drake, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber are very popular in both years. Even Ariana Grande was known amongst late millennials and early gen z in 2010 - Netflix exists as a streaming service in both years. I remember when Netflix was only $3.99/mo in 2010, imagine that now lol
Things that are different about 2010 & 2019: - Obama is replaced by Trump (US) - Social media influencers are a thing in 2019 and social media itself is more integrated into our daily lives unlike 2010 - Facebook is king in 2010. Tiktok is king in 2019 - Things like smartwatches, contactless payment, or smart speakers (Alexa, Google Home) didn’t exist or weren’t common yet in 2010 unlike 2019 - Cable is king in 2010. Streaming is king in 2019 - Still recovering from the recession in 2010. Stable economy in 2019 (US) - Things like Cancel Culture and SJW and Alt Right culture changed the political climate by 2019. 2010 was more laid back in that sense - Political movements like BLM and MeToo were years away in 2010 - Netflix did not have original series in 2010 - Gen Z has taken over the youth culture by 2019 while it was still firmly late millennial in 2010 - Hipsters had yet to peak in popularity in 2010 while they are pretty much dead in 2019 - You could still get away with not having a smartphone or even a phone at all in 2010, while both are mandatory in 2019

- Flat screen TVs are common in both years Yes, but most TVs in 2010 were plasma and 720p, while in 2019 they were OLED and 4k. Pretty drastic change in image quality.

Dated: Electropop, Obama being president (along with the Tea Party and ACA debacles being the centerpieces of American politics at the time), high-bezel smartphones and HDTVs, recession slowly fading away, Silly Bandz, cable still relevant, Angry Birds, seventh-gen gaming and Facebook being the de facto social media site.
Recent: Some of the stars (Taylor Swift, Drake, etc), and smartphones and HDTVs (albeit a lot more high-tech).

2010 is a prime example of a year that's dated in a GOOD way. No political alt-right/Donald Trump bullshit, shiny skeuomorphic aesthetics vs. shitty Blob Web like today, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network were still popular, less privacy invasion from modern technology, social media didn't control people's lives, no cancel culture. I also think movies and video games were better in 2010 vs today. Superheroes didn't completely dominate the box office, and video games still had soul put into them. Fewer microtransactions. Less buggy. Film and gaming didn't really decline until 2011 and 2013 respectively IMO.
