2016 was such a wild era for youtube. It's like youtube pretended it was the early-mid 00s for one year. Also fuck leafy. That is an insult to the early-mid 00s. Early-mid 00s humor was edgy but it was WAY more nuanced and had more substance to it. Think Jackass, South Park, Family Guy, most Newgrounds animations, etc. 2016 humor is just tryhard 12 year olds thinking they’re so badass and edgy by saying things like “kys”, “cancer”, “autistic”, “cringe”, “hiss”, and other such things. So glad those days are gone honestly.

It's like people had enough of the soulless gentrified atmosphere of the 2010s so people tried to be as edgy as possible as a backlash to it but like you said it sounds like 12 year olds who learnt what "kys" means.

I don’t blame people for wanting to be edgy as a backlash against mainstream wholesome blandness. Just a reminder, a song LITERALLY called “Happy” was popular in 2014. What’s fascinating to me is how Internet culture in 2014-2016 was really edgy, but pop culture for the most part was still overly happy and saccharine. It wasn’t until 2017 that pop culture became edgy.

Damn, I really can't believe it's been 5-7 years ago since those internet memes were a thing.
I remembered the Vines, Filthy Frank, MLG/420s, Pepe the Frog, ear-rapes, and the deep-fried memes that were very popular on the internet at the time and besides Filthy Frank (I can still laugh at his absurdist humor from time to time), I do not look fondly on this era a whole lot. I personally prefer the more sane meme culture of the early 2010s (Trollface, Nyan Cat, rage comics, "Hide Yo Kids", top text/bottom text, etc).
