Anyone else remember when so many people tried to be so edgy and offensive in 2015-17? Cringe and dank meme culture was basically "Oh he likes Minecraft, that is so cringe" "kys", and "drink bleach" type of humor. A lot of people used the n-word with a hard r and using the word autism as a pejorative. Filthy Frank and Idubbz were highlights of the internet culture of this time period. Late 2016 was when Pewdiepie became edgy and memey. There was also a lot of "anti-sjw" sentiment.

I feel like internet has always been this way, especially if you go near the 4chan side of things.
I do remember 2016 being a particular stinker of a year for the internet with all the political turmoil, the terrible memes and the ad-pocalypse meltdown though.

2016 was such a wild era for youtube. It's like youtube pretended it was the early-mid 00s for one year.
Also fuck leafy.

Somehow that particular side of the internet had influence in mainstream internet culture in 2016. Donald Trump retweeted a Pepe version of himself. He probably don’t know the context lmao.

I feel like it was brewing up around 2015, peaked in 2016 and 2017, and was gone by 2019. Maybe TikTok had something to do with it.
Either way, glad that era of the internet is gone. It was toxic asf.

I was in middle school during this era and I thought I was a meme lord. I remember it all too well.

Another aspect of tryhard late 10s internet: surreal or "abstract" memes
Yes, they're still around but they're way less "random" than they used to be circa 2017-2018
Remember that meme "E"? The one with the deep friend lord farquad/Markiplier
That shit was so unfunny on retrospect
Deep-fried memes (with a bunch of emojis and stuff) in general aren't very popular anymore, i feel like they really fell off around 2019-2020

It basically was the last thing of the edgelord era to go.

It’s more like 2015-2016 to 2017-2018 to some extent early 19. It was kinda of semi acceptable to have toned down and repackaged super right wing view points ex obsession with being alpha, women need to embrace traditionalism, and debates around anti immigration , a rise in edgy bigoted comments and 4chan type humor, major alt right channels weren’t banned yet from YouTube and were at their peak, increasing internet figures adopting these edgy or alt right adjacent attitudes ex pew de pie and lots of debates between people like Richard Spencer and others all over the internet, like they were valid figures. Kind of a regressive time in internet culture.

And yes I did make edgy jokes but not to the extent that you’re talking lol.

Never really adopted alt-right viewpoints at the time thank lord. I think humor right now is just wojak memes and whatever is on Tiktok.
