It really is apples and oranges, and 2001 is not like 2004 or 2006 shifts, the world was kind of reshaped in 2001 in a way ( even before 9/11 hit) Not really. Pop music maybe, but not the world. im not doubting 2008 was bigger ( because it was) but nightmare is acting as if 2001 was a nothing burger year, the pop culture events that occurred in 2001 shaped the rest of the 2000s decade Think about Grand Theft Auto 3 and Halo, those games changed the way we play games and became cultural moments in time, for starters.

No but I can do a thing called research. 2001 had 9/11 and somewhat of a shift in pop culture. But still, the shifts in 2008 with the recession start, obama being elected and the very start of electropop being popular is way bigger. Namely the recession. 9/11 is a one off event which warrants a shift but not as significant as the stock market completely crashing, many people losing their houses, their jobs and businesses, etc. 2008 shift is multifaceted, 2001 shift is 99% 9/11. This isn't just me theorizing, most people that vividly remember the time agree on this. 2008 was bigger objectively, but 2001 is right behind it ( in terms of top 2000s shift years) The fact that you think 9/11 is 99% the shift in 2001 proves you don't know what you are talking about. ask slashpop he will agree with me Latter 2001, 2001 in general, definitely polished, solidified the 2000s character, and identity for the rest of the decade on the most basic level. It was like 2011 of the 2010s. It wasn’t 2003 or another year. 2000 was almost there and 99 contributed a lot and was close but too Y2k/late 90s. Most of the stereotypical 2000s music, fashion, mentality the way through was built on top evolved or modified from 2001 Also not everything but lots of things people think started in 2003 or 2006 were there in 2001 ( bleached jeans, messy faux hawks, iPods, hip hop trends, movies trends, standards for kids trends, typical electronic beats) but just became highlighted, more evolved or more popular September 11 is just a potion of what makes 2001.Even if 09 was based on 2004 and 2006 shifts the overall decade identity was first polished in 2001.
