I don't think Pharrell Williams would make a song that has lyrics like "kill people, burn shit, fuck school".

He absolutely did though: Sad how many people reduces his legacy to just "Happy". That is one of the most early 2000s songs I've ever heard. I think Happy became a big hit because it was 2013/2014 and overly happy, optimistic, wholesome pop culture was the norm back then. I hated it. It felt like the 1950s/1960s all over again.

It was helped a lot by the fact it was the feature song on "Despicable Me 2". But its massive succes in 2014, a year where childish drivel like "Wiggle", "Anaconda", "Shake It Off" and "All About That Bass" reigned supreme really isn't surprising.

Needless to say, and I'll say it again, I was very much not a fan of the pop culture of either of these years. I still hate the late 2010s with a passion but if there's ONE good thing I can say, it's that at least it actually had the balls to be dark and edgy and accept that life wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, very much unlike the early-mid 2010s. It felt more like the 90s and 00s (except the late 90s/Y2K era).

This is how i see it Adele → Amy Winehouse Twenty One Pilots → Panic at the disco/Fall Out Boys Ariana Grande → Gwen Stefani Fifth Harmony → The Pussycat dolls Ed Sheeran → James Blunt Jesus Derulo → Chris Brown Nicki Minaj → Lil Kim Demi Lovato → Christina Aguilera Carly Rae Jepsen → Vanessa Carlton Drake → Eminem (Biggest rapstar of their respective decades) but their personality and music couldn't be any different Taylor Swift → Britney Spears (huge strech though, but i think both of them represent an idealized "blonde girl next door" americana). Both of them also managed to stay relevant throughout their respective decades. But thats where the similarities end. Late 10s mumble rappers → late 00s ringtone rappers. (both were annoying as fuck, everyone made fun of them. And they all fell off as soon as the posterior decades started [2020s, 2010s]) Billie Eillish → Avril Lavigne. This one is also a huge stretch because Billie only became popular in the very ending of the 2010s, and also i think Billie is wayyy more authentic than Avril. But both them were edgy teenage emo brats. Personally I'd say Macklemore for the Eminem of the 2010s, he was nowhere near as popular as Eminem and he kinda became irrelevant after the hype over his songs "Thriftshop" and "Can't Hold Us" died down but they're both really fast rappers and white. He sounded and looked closer to Eminem than Drake did, even though Drake was way more popular and relevant.

I think Twenty One Pilots is the new Linkin Park in regards to their playing around with music genres coupled with their angsty lyrics. Some of their songs have been characterized as rap rock too. I strangely agree with this, no wonder why I love Twenty One Pilots then though lol. They're one of my top if not top bands of the 2010s and Lincoln Park is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite band of all time. Heavydirtysoul by Twenty One Pilots definitely gives off rap/rock if not rock, rap/EDM type rock vibes. Lincoln Park was way heavier on the guitar rock though, but I can't think of any other 2010s band to compare them to.

Guitar rock isn’t really popular in the 2010s like it was in the 2000s, so you have to take what you can get.

Well that's what I mean, I'd say Lincoln Park was way more guitar rocky/rap and Twenty One Piolets is a different type of rock/rap, non-guitarist rock/EDM type. It's the closest thing you get to rock in the 2010s because throughout the decade the most popular genres were electronic pop, EDM, and trap rap/hip-hop. In the 00s it was rock was still everywhere all the time and crunk rap, + R & B pop was popular.
