When I look back at it there is sort of an innocence and authenticity to it that you don't feel in subsequent years. Especially the first three quarters. 2016 is basically the 2008 of the 2010s. Trump got elected, political divisions really took off, memes started permeating everything, music changed and some other stuff which made the late part of the year or 2017 feel so distant from 2015.

Imo, it would be the first quarter of 2016.

The 2000s had a bunch of 2008s "2008"s of the 2000s were 2001 and 2008, 2010s it was 2016, 2020s it was obv 2020. On the topic I think late 2015 starts to feel more modern. Not like yesterday but not really "dated" either. Music started getting more moody around that time too, and the DJ Mustard "hey hey hey" party era of rap was mostly over by then.

When JB's "Sorry" came out late 2015 that's when it started to feel like the modern 10s.

2007 is a hybrid of modern and old 2000s 2016 is a hybrid too
In my humble opinion only 2017-2019 counts as modern 10s

It doesn't have the innocent, simpler feeling previous years have looking back.

It just doesn't feel as modern as 2017 to me, the cold atmosphere of the 2010s hadn't set yet until after trump was elected (November) so the very last months of 2016 And the first half of 2016 wasn't as weird or sad as the latter half at all
