You COULD NOT, however, avoid it from 2016 onwards. That's why 2016 is the shift year. It permeated into everything from then on. You know what? I agree, because 2016 is when many YouTubers started getting into scandals. The MeToo movement might've gone mainstream in late 2017, but I remember there were already YouTubers being accused of sexual harassment and pedophilia in 2016. Yes and also trump won and brexit was voted in. I also noticed right wing viewpoints becoming mainstream and more right wingers on youtube that year like paul joseph watson.

I guess I wouldn't pick "innocent" as the descriptor, but it was a time where there was quite a bit of childlike things in pop culture. As we've discussed in some other threads, you had poop, rainbows, slime, unicorns, etc., though that's not necessarily specific to 2017. I think the year might possibly qualify for peak "Disney adult" year however, it's also the year Jojo bows took off. Graphic t's/sneakers were trendy. Otherwise I would associate the hype for kid/family entertainment, such as Star Wars/Marvel and cartoons, as an era thing that was going strong in 2017. There were some darker or more mature elements creeping in, but I wouldn't say that they felt dominant yet. I do remember slime being a big thing in 2017, but I think the whole "unicorn poop" thing was more 2018. Fidget spinners were big in 2017, and that was also the year Nintendo had their comeback, so I do agree in a sense that 2017 was kinda "childish". Even still, I get a more childlike vibe from the late 00s/early 10s, when scene culture was in its prime, cat memes and videos were huge (Nyan Cat in particular comes off as very childish), and internet/meme culture was COMPLETELY apolitical in a very stark contrast from today (2012 with Kony and SOPA/PIPA was the start). Music was also incredibly upbeat, with songs like California Girls having a very childish vibe. Animated movies were also more popular than usual during that timeframe, in contrast to the late 2010s which was dominated by Disney's live-action remakes.

I looked up Paul Joseph Watson on Google Trends, and indeed, he was rapidly gaining in popularity in late 2016, peaking in 2017. Not surprising, 2017 was the peak of the alt-right. That's when the Unite the Right rally occurred. I'm also not surprised you feel the way you do about 2016. 2016 was already a big shift year here in the States, but an EVEN bigger one in the UK. Like, 2016 in the UK is on par with 2001 in the US.

Here, I would say 2016-2017 was a bigger shift than 2015-2016. I think it was a bigger shift anyway due to other things like Vine shutting down, YouTubers getting demonetized, and the Switch being released.

I found the 2015-2016 school year to be a big shift because political tensions, meme culture becoming modern, music changed, streaming blowing up, 7th gen fully dead, also lots of superhero movies blew up.

2017 was also Canada's 150th birthday which was pretty cool as well.

I also think 2017 will be remembered for a lot of 2010s things/trends since it was when fidget spinners were huge and when EDM peaked. Pokemon Go was also still around.

Pokémon Go was a very short-lived fad. It was big in 2016 and died immediately afterwards. I’d say EDM peaked more in 2015-2016, though it was still big in 2017.

NINTENDO SWITCH! How did I forget about that??? I added that to the list in my first post on this thread. Man this year was a lot better than even I remembered.

I still remember me and my brother seeing the solar eclipse that year and my mom texting me from her work saying it looks like it's 9:00pm (it was around 11 in the morning).
