Think about it. It was the year of fidget spinners, fidget cubes, Nintendo Switch, Pokemon Go, The Solar Eclipse, The Chainsmokers, latin pop, etc. I predict in the future (distant future) people will look back at 2017 as the last "old school" year with an innocent vibe to it. Kinda how people look back on 2005 or 1997 nowadays.

Pokémon Go and The Chainsmokers were 2016 things. And neither 2016 nor 2017 were anything but innocent. Need I remind you of all the mass shootings, terrorist attacks, and protests/riots that happened throughout both years? Granted, the 2010s was plagued with these things (except 2010), but especially 2016 and 2017.

I highly doubt any part of the Trump era will be seen as innocent

It actually felt like a year of hope and optimism rather than cynicism. Nothing else really bad happened that year, with the exception of the Haiti earthquake, and that's something that's out of our control.

And yet As much as I love the early 2000s, I also can acknowledge it was a time of uncertainty and paranoia in America. I definitely would not call it an innocent time. The 2010s however will undoubtedly receive the same treatment previous decades had: blindful nostalgia ignorant of the decade's flaws. So you're definitely going to have people calling the 2010s innocent, even despite it being a very tumultuous decade from a sociopolitical perspective.

Chainsmokers were popular in 2017 that's when they put out their album and had their popular song "Something Just Like This" with the Chainsmokers and that was one of the top songs of the year.. People still played Pokemon Go in 2017. It's not as if it dropped off the face of the earth. Just because people weren't talking about it as much since it wasn't new, doesn't mean people stopped playing it. You still saw people in out in groups outside in 2017 playing it.

The economy was recovering from its low point of 2008/2009.

I don't think 2017 will be looked back as the last "innocent year" or "old-school." If anything, I think either 2016 or 2019 will gain that title because they were pre-Trump and pre-COVID respectively. Also, most people associate Pokemon GO with summer 2016. 2017 doesn't really have any historical "lasts" to make it be considered the last innocent year.

As the year the 2010s went downhill. And I don't entirely disagree.

If any late 2010s year gets that treatment I agree, it's going to be 2019

They must be delusional if they think anyone will give a crap about the 2010s culture war in the future when being nostalgic about the decade
