1990s
Edgy - 1994 (Doom and Mortal Kombat were huge, grunge aesthetics everywhere, people are obsessed with Kurt Cobain)
Wholesome - 1990 (violent video games weren't even a thing yet, and The Cosby Show was still the biggest show on TV)
2000s
Edgy - 2005 (Emo, Shadow the Hedgehog, Devil May Cry, Anakin, MySpace, what the fuck do I need to say?)
Wholesome - 2009 (rock was off the charts by this point, and even the rock that WAS popular was very lighthearted shlock, colorful scene aesthetics were very popular)
2010s
Edgy - 2017 (emo rap, edgy internet humor, sad boi Bart Simpson pictures)
Wholesome - 2011 (Nyan Cat, rage comics, Party Rock Anthem)

What made 2005 extra edgy was the fact it was before the Wii and Club Penguin blew up, the latter of which is like, the OPPOSITE of edgy (swearing literally gets you banned). Yet it was also after colorful platformers had declined in popularity.
So you got an era spanning roughly 2003-2005 that consists almost entirely of edgy games (shooters, hack and slash, GTA clones).
Hell, even the platformers from this era are edgy, like Jak II and Shadow the Hedgehog.

Edgy: 2018 Wholesome: 2014 I can agree that 2014 was wholesome. Happy was one of the biggest songs that year. IMO, I think 2011, 2013, and 2014 were all very wholesome years.

The reason I picked 2017 as the edgiest year is that it was the only year of the 2010s that was edgy in both ways. You had angsty emo rap stuff and sad boi memes paired up with edgy iDubbz/cringe humor still being popular (like it was 2015-2016). 2017 was basically the 2006 of the 2010s honestly. Both were very edgy years, lots of angsty stuff online, and also, both years saw the release of a very popular Nintendo console.
