1993 and 1996 are the edgiest years of the 90s, because the highest-grossing animated movies of both years were dark (Nightmare Before Christmas and Hunchback of Norte Dame). 1992-1996 as a whole was quite edgy. Grunge and gangsta rap defined the era, with gritty action and drama movies being popular. Even Batman Returns from 1992 was really edgy.

Nintendo 64 hype was also everywhere as wells as a HUGE push for AOL Internet due to Bush vs Dole. Little did we know in the States that Spice girls were about to take over with their Teen Pop sound in a mere few months.

All the big movies in 1997 were very light and wholesome. The biggest movie that year, Titanic, was basically a chick flick, whilst other movies like Batman and Robin and Men In Black were very cheesy and lighthearted. The Disney movie that year, Hercules, was much lighter than the dark Hunchback of Notre Dame. Don’t even get me started on the music, which was defined heavily by the likes of Aqua, Hanson, Aaron Carter, and of course, Spice Girls.

2010 had a lot of kids movies being very popular. Toy Story 3 topped the box office that year. From that perspective alone, 2010 was a very wholesome year. It certainly helped Justin Bieber and electropop were huge that year. Edgiest would be 2017 and 2019. Logan came out 2017, and that's one of the darkest superhero movies ever made. Joker came out in 2019, was a huge movie, and that movie is dark and depressing as shit. Billie Eilish was also huge that year. So 2019 was very edgy too. 2017-2019 in general was an edgy phase of pop and internet culture.

And in general I think 2010 was kind of edgy for cinema overall with things like Inception, Black Swan, Shutter Island and Kick-Ass. Feels a lot like a 2000s year in that regard.

TS3 honestly feels more late 00s than early 10s in terms of overall vibe, though that's more due to things like 1. There's a flip phone in the movie and 2. it's widely regarded as Pixar's last good movie before they went to making shit like Cars 2 and Brave, which is far more representative of early 10s film (an era that, needless to say, I don't have a particularly high opinion of TBH). Even though Toy Story 3 is dark by Pixar standards (especially compared to their incredibly saccharine next film, Cars 2), the other big animated movies that year is stuff like Tangled and Despicable Me (which IMO are more representative of the early 10s zeitgeist). If there is a 2010 movie I would actually call somewhat "edgy", it would probably be Alice In Wonderland, with its gothic Tim Burton aesthetic.

I was there, it didn't feel that much different ( Q4 1996) from the rest of 1997 aside from music and movies

Revenge of the Sith came out in 2005, and many Star Wars fans still consider it the darkest Star Wars movie. It literally has Anakin going around killing children, and he gets set on fire. There's a REASON it was the first Star Wars film to get a PG-13 rating.

2004 was a very edgy year for movies too. Passion of the Christ and Saw were big movies that year, and they're very violent movies.

For video games, I’d say
1990s
Wholesome - 1991 (Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario World) Edgy - 1994 (Doom II, Mortal Kombat II (console ports), Killer Instinct, Primal Rage)
2000s
Wholesome - 2003 (Sonic Heroes, Simpsons: Hit and Run, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Battle for Bikini Bottom) Edgy - 2008 (Dead Space, Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty: World at War, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2)
Not sure about the 2010s though

Diddy, "Mmmbop", "Quit Playing Games" - Edgy = 1993: Schnilder's List, The Fugitive, Nightmare Before Christmas, Menace II Society, Falling Down, Carlito's Way, "Nuthin' But a G Thang", "In Utero", "Siamese Dream", "Enter the Wu-Tang" 2000s - Wholesome = 2001: Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone, Shrek, Legally Blonde, Amélie, How High, A Beautiful Mind, Princess Diaries, "All For You", "Drops of Jupiter", "Thank You" - Edgy = 2005: Red Eye, Sin City, War of the World, Batman Begins, Corpse Bride, "The Massacre", "Mezmerize" 2010s - Wholesome = 2011: The Smurfs, Green Lantern, Crazy Stupid Love, Rio, The Artist, The Tree of Life, "The Edge of Glory", "Party Rock Anthem", "Someone Like You" - Edgy = 2017: Blade Runner 2047, It, Murder on the Orient Express, Fifty Shades Darker, The Shape of Water, "1-800-273-8255", "XO Tour Llif3", "Bad Things" 1984 was easily my favorite year of the 80s. Probably the best year of the 80s too. For sure, wholesome. 2011 was also a very wholesome year for the 2010s.

Toy Story 3 kinda did feel like the late 2000s in that sense. Now that I'm thinking about it, so did the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid as well. Very 2009 vibes and was a bit more dark and edgier compared to the sequels.
