2009 has as much in common with 2010s zeitgeist as 1930 has in common with the stone age.
What is the 2010s zeitgeist?Smartphones, a variety of Social Media apps, Memes, Streaming, Indie pop, etc. There are more things which define it but these are amongst the biggest.
What does 2009 have in common with these things?Smartphones? Barely anyone has them. They didn't become commonplace until 2011.
And smartphones are probably the most definitive thing of the 2010s that changed how we lived our lives.Social Media? Only facebook was popular alongside MySpace. MySpace is a clear cut 2000s social media so if we include that it makes 2009 an even less "2010s" year. Otherwise the only case that can be made is that facebook was starting to get popular but there still wasn't a proper variety of social media like instagram, snapchat, vine, kik, whatsapp, tumblr, etc. The social media era clearly hadn't begun yet.
Memes? The memes that existed were primitive late 00s/early 10s era memes which are not representative of 2010s style memes and memes hadn't seeped into most aspects of internet/youth culture like it did in the 2010s.
Streaming? Wasn't even close to being mainstream back in 2009.
Music? Electropop which died out in 2013. Everything else sounded like it could be in previous years of the 2000s. Indie pop, EDM and trap/mumble rap weren't mainstream.
I don't get why people keep saying it is a 2010s year. At best it is a hybrid era between the 2000s and 2010s that doesn't fit properly in either era.
