I've noticed that a few of us on here are fans of Mario, so I thought it would be interesting to see how many of us like Mario. If yes, how did you become interested in the Mario franchise?

I'd say so. Like a lot of people, Mario was my introduction to video gaming as a whole via Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64. Super Mario World is still one of my favourite platformers of all time.
I will say I'm a little uncomfortable with Nintendo's complacency with Mario in more recent years, when both the world and the gaming industry have gotten more complex; well okay, the latter maybe not so much, but considering Mario's been around for 37 years now, there are some things that now seem a little tiring. In particular, I feel that Mario's persona has gone from sprightly and loose to upbeat but also kind of smug, like he realizes how positive his reputation is. It's probably the result of marketing more than anything else, or especially the onslaught of samey New Super Mario Bros. games that got released in more recent times, though at least Super Mario Odyssey suggests there's always more to do with the character. Also, unlike Princess Zelda, Peach has had almost no development as a character whatsoever even after roughly a third of a century since her introduction, making her one of the most useless and unsexy females in gaming history. She's just there to be captured and talk in a high, squeaky voice.

Always have been and always will be! The very first game I ever played was Super Mario Bros. for the NES when I was 3. My dad bought it from a flea market perhaps. It was simplistic but challenging enough that a 3 year old could enjoy it. Ever since then I've been hooked. I play Mario Kart 8 with my coworkers at lunch on my Switch. I got Mario Odyssey for my birthday from a friend, I've yet to open it though. I did play at a friend's house though, and I played it for 4 hours without stopping.

Even in the video game Super Princess Peach for the DS that's titled after her, the story revolves more around the anthropomorphized umbrella she holds rather than herself.

It’s a really hard choice considering I first owned a Sega Master System (which my grandparents bought secondhand for us), and that included the Sonic the Hedgehog game that I spent hours trying to beat. But..... Yes, yes, YES!!! It all started way back when my parents first bought me the N64 console one Christmas. I loved playing Mario Kart and played it for many hours at a time (with siblings, friends and by myself). Then some months later, Super Mario 64 came along. I’ve basically been hooked on the franchise ever since.

Some of those levels were tough enough to require game cheats, but I beat the end level without the cheater and recall being extremely proud of myself. So needless to say it always holds nostalgic memories for me. I never did get into the Mario racing games and the 3D ones, just the old fashioned originals.

I was browsing through the Gaming sub-board a few minutes ago and I happened to come across this thread. I wonder who voted no?

Who voted no? I did, our Shark! No interest at all. I prefer more challenging, strategic games.

I find it interesting the complete lack of Sonic votes. Trust me, if there were more '80s babies on this forum, that would not be the case!

We do already have quite a few '80s born members on Popedia, so i'm not sure if it would change the results too much. Mario is obviously just very popular among all of us here!
