I think anyone that is cast in the same role as the late great Robin Williams should expect high and unrealistic expectations from people.I don't see anything wrong with Will Smith's performance either. If anything, he has put a new twist to the role and is making the Genie his own. I personally won't be watching the new movie (I was never really a big fan of the original, tbh), but I hope it will be well received by critics.

Some of the comments I’ve read are a bit unfair though. Will is a great actor but Robin was definitely on an entirely different level, of course. I most likely won’t watch it at the cinemas, but I may decide to buy the DVD when that is released (I’ll probably do the same with new The Lion King and Detective Pikachu movies).

What movies (if any) are you guys planning on seeing at the cinemas during the New Year period?
I will be going along to watch the new Star Wars movie tomorrow hopefully. I was hoping to see the latest Jumanji movie with a few friends in the coming days too.

I went and saw the new Star Wars movie with three of my friends this afternoon. As someone who has never watched a Star Wars movie or taken interest in the franchise, I found the film to be pretty confusing, tbh. It wasn't too my liking. I didn't particularly like how the movie would jump from one scene to another without any explanation, it made it hard to follow the storyline for first-time Star Wars movie goers like myself. Also, there was hardly any humour in the film; I was hoping that there might have been a few jokes thrown in which would appeal to those new to the franchise like the MCU movies do, but nope. Yeah, I want to see the new Jumanji movie as well. I probably won't go to the cinemas to watch it though, I might wait until it appears on the Foxtel Store.

I finally saw the last Star Wars movie, and I didn't enjoy it. It was such a huge mistake to not have an overarching plan going into this trilogy, and it shows in how slapped together all the final story beats are.

I watched Jumanji : The Next Level for the first time last night. Has anyone else seen it? Tbh, I had a few hesitations about watching it because I felt as though the rebooted movie wrapped things up nicely, however the second movie turned out to be just as enjoyable as the first.

Did any of y'all actually end up watching the Aladdin remake? I was surprised that I found it quite enjoyable!

Did any of y'all actually end up watching the Aladdin remake? I was surprised that I found it quite enjoyable! I did last year. I honestly found it better than I expected. The visuals were actually good and Will Smith was pretty funny as the genie despite all the backlash he received when he first appeared in the trailer. I find it better than the Lion King remake because it displays more emotion whereas if you watched the Lion King, the characters do not express as much as emotion as the characters in Aladdin do. Emotion is a big key when you are making a movie. Now don't get me wrong, Lion King is visually stunning but it is not very coherent in terms of just how the characters act in that film. I was the only one in my family who wasn't hyped for that movie because it didn't look very good except for the graphics involved. The only thing that the Lion King stands out from Aladdin to me is just the visuals because it looks so close to real but it's not. It just looks aesthetically pleasing.

His credits include that trailer and the ones for Sonic, Rocket Man, and Toy Story 4. He told me recently that he got to see the infamous first cut of the Sonic movie and it was really bad.

I do see this as a limitation of technology and realism. I mean, animals are of course anatomically different and don’t really experience human emotions. This prevents say, giving them a a great big smile, the way you could a traditional cartoon. Admittedly I did enjoy the remake, more than I expected to. But it did more remind me of watching a nature documentary, and having to rely on the narration to know exactly what was going on. You might like watching “Frank and Ollie” on Disney+ if you haven’t. They discuss drawing emotion into cartoons.

Wonder how bad it really is. I wish we could see the first cut to be grateful for what we got.
