Happy New Year everyone! Seeing as how some parts of the world have already entered into the 2020s, I guess it makes sense to create a new topic dedicated to discussing the music releases and trends of the 2020s! It will be interesting to look back on this topic once we get to NYE 2029. I'm hoping that this will become a detailed insight into 2020s music as it is going on.

Bedroom pop will possibly break through the mainstream this decade.

Bedroom pop will possibly break through the mmainstream this decade. It will be interesting to see if it happens sometime in the next year or two. I'm predicting that it will, especially with the success that Billie Eilish has had.

www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100The first Billboard Hot 100 chart of the 2020s has been published. There isn't really anything interesting to report as of yet, however i'm sure there will probably be a few new releases debut on the charts within the next couple of weeks.

Yeah I’d give it at least another week or two. IMO we’re still seeing the leftovers of last year until mid- to late January. Even if the sound of the 2020s isn’t bedroom pop, I’d stake my prediction on at least some variation of lo fi. You were seeing those vibes everywhere already last summer, so I expect it to be a dominant mood for at least the next couple years.

I think people can say its the 20s now, and whenever people talk about the 20s, it will refer to the 2020s, not 1920s.

I heard this song on the radio for the first time earlier this afternoon and I have to say, it's probably the first EDM song I've heard which doesn't actually sound like it belongs to the 2010s. Then again, I know very little about EDM in general, so my observations might be wrong. It was released in October.

Yeah, this sounds quite different from 2010s EDM. Wikipedia says house, but this sounds different even from house that I remember from the 2000s. There's elements of rap, pop rock, and maybe other club genres here.

There's elements of rap, pop rock, and maybe other club genres here. I agree. The thing that stuck out to me the most when listening to it earlier was the echoing and distortion of the female vocals; it seems lo-fi inspired. It'll be interesting to see whether or not "Purple Hat" achieves more success on the charts in the coming months. It's definitely possible, as they seem to be gaining momentum right on the fringes of the mainstream. "Purple Hat" actually debuted on the ARIA Charts this week at #50 and it's currently sitting at #33 on our iTunes chart. Also, one of their other singles, "Swing", is featured on the soundtracks of FIFA 20 and Need for Speed Heat. Who knows, Sofi Tukker could possibly become one of the biggest EDM duos in music over the next few years.

For some people, it is the second week of the 20s as of this comment.

It’s not bad, but at the same time I feel like it’s trying so hard to be different.

I like it better than their other material, which I looked up after he posted this. The rest of it is rather bland.

The first major release of the decade was this...
This is incredibly mediocre. Honestly not much better what he did now a decade ago with "Baby" and stuff.

I really think something lo-fi related is just going to up and explode in the next year or two. Whether that's bedroom pop, lo-fi hip hop, or something else entirely, I can't be sure. But I'm sensing a Nevermind moment on the horizon, something that may not define the entire decade but which will set the whole tone for years thereafter.

Would you also say it's possible for UK Drill Beat to become more popular in the US and Canada? I mean, Drake's song called "War" has UK drill beat influences as well as "GATTI". It wouldn't surprise me if UK Drill becomes more popular in North America too.
