I'm not a fan of dividing eras into two parts. Eras naturally change over time as trends come and go, and I think it's just easier to say that the period of time between late 2009-early 2013 was one long era. Yeah I’d even extend it through the remainder of 2013. It wasn’t until 2014 that social justice warrior or danger hair became commonly known terminology, and that to me is what kicks off the other “face” of the 2010s in earnest: Black Lives Matter, Dark Enlightenment, and the beginnings of both radical right and left.

Music in 2010 was more like 2008 while music in 2012 was more like 2015. If it wasn't for the electropop holdovers in 2012, I think more people would classify that year more with the mid '10s than the early. Yeah the core 2010s began in 2012. Yeah it definitely did not just randomly start in 2013. I would say at some point between mid 2011 and late 2012.

IMO more like maybe Late Summer or Fall 2012 through the Early Fall of 2013 was the transition from the Early 2010s to the Mid 2010s.

IMO more like maybe Late Summer or Fall 2012 through the Early Fall of 2013 was the transition from the Early 2010s to the Mid 2010s. I’m talking about the core culture.

Oh, that makes sense and I agree. First year with any Core 2010s feel would be 2011 with it becoming more apparent in 2013. (kind of mirroring the 2000s with 2001 and 2003 in a way.)

I love the 1st half. The 2nd half of that era was great too. How I see it: 1st Half - October 2009-April 2011 Late Spring/Summer 2011: Mixture of both phrases 2nd Half - Fall 2011-Spring 2013 Agreed. I think we share a similar view. Fall 2009-winter 2010/2011 was the 1st 1/2 which leaned toward late 2000s influences with tiny core 2010s influences. Spring-summer 2011 was an even mixture of core 2010s & late 2000s influences. The 2nd 1/2 was fall 2011-winter 2012/2013 which leaned towards core 2010s influences with minor late 2000s influences.

The more I think about it, I found out that there really are 2 faces of each era: Early 2010s Part 1: Fall 2009 to Spring 2011 Early 2010s Part 2: Spring 2011 to Summer/Fall 2013ish Mid 2010s Part 1: Fall 2013 to Summer 2015 Mid 2010s Part 2: Summer 2015 to Summer/Fall 2016 Late 2010s Part 1: Fall 2016 to either Winter 2018/19 or Spring 2019 True Late 2010s Part 2: Spring 2019- Its complicated... Oh god… MID 2010S PART 1 Five Nights at Freddys, Windows 8, Gamergate, Flappy Bird, prime PewDiePie, peak Minecraft, peak hipster, booty songs, What Does the Fox Say, selfie culture, MLG memes, Doge That era just feels so weirdly distinct for some reason. So many things were going on in a cultural sense and it didn’t have that depressed vibe of the later 2010s, but it was still the start of our modern politically correct society.

Also, I’d say the early 2010s pt. 2 begins in late 2011 with the official release of Minecraft, Occupy Wall Street, SOPA/PIPA, the death of Steve Jobs, and bronies entering the mainstream. It runs from late 2011 until mid 2013. The early 2010s part 1 began in late 2009 with Nickelodeon changing their logo, Annoying Orange, Avatar, Angry Birds, and electropop becoming the dominant strand of music. And it ran until mid 2011

The early 2010s are kind of like 2 eras packed into one. The hybrid 00/10s early 10s(
Late 2009 - Early 2011) and then the High tech early 10s which is post iraq war(Mid 2011 - Late 2013)

The best era of my childhood and it was musically a lot better and more fresh than the 2nd half, although the 2nd half felt more authentically 10s and not like the 1st half where it was too unauthentically 00s while also being too pre-10s.

The early 2000s I would say are pretty cleanly split by one event, 9/11. So you have what I would classify as the pre-9/11 early 00s (or Y2K era pt. 2), and then the post-9/11 early 00s. You also have what John Titor labeled as the "false mid-2000s", but I like early 2000s part 3 better.
For me personally, this is how I see it:
Early 2000s Part 1: Late 2000 - Mid 2001
Early 2000s Part 2: Late 2001 - 2002
Early 2000s Part 3: 2003 - Mid 2004

early 10s part 1:
late 2009 - mid 2011 (begins around the time Lady Gaga released Bad Romance and nickelodeon changes it’s logo and ends around the time Osama bin Laden is killed)
early 10s part 2:
late 2011 - mid 2013 (begins around the time Steve Jobs dies & siri is first introduced and ends around the time Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz era begins)
peak school year: 2011-12
mid 10s part 1:
mid 2013 - early 2015 (begins around the time of the release of GTA 5, ios 7, and 8th gen gaming consoles and ends around the time Trump announces his presidential run)
mid 10s part 2:
mid 2015 - late 2016 (begins when Trump announces his presidential run and ends around the time Trump wins the 2016 election)
peak school year: 2014-15
late 10s part 1:
early 2017 - mid 2018 (begins around the time of Trumps inauguration and Vine’s termination and ends around the time tiktok is first released)
late 10s part 2:
late 2018 - early 2020 (begins with the release of tiktok and when airpods became more popular and ends with the beginning of covid)
