Looking back at the early 2010s, I’ve noticed there seems to be 2 different parts to this era when it comes to music. A lot of pop songs from 2010 sound a bit different from 2012, although they both sound very early 2010s. The second half of the early 10s feels and looks like an updated version of the first half.

I always felt this way. The 1st part could be from fall 2009-summer 2011. The 2nd part could be from fall 2011-summer 2013. I also think the mid & late 2010s could be split up into 2 parts as well. Definitely! The mid 2010s split somewhere between early to mid 2015, I’d say

No wonder y 2011 is considered the quintessential year of the early 2010s & 2015 is considered the quintessential year of the mid 2010s. Early 2010s part 1 had tons of lingering late 2000s influences. Early 2010s part 2 had core 2010s influences overshadow minimal leftover late 2000s influences. Mid 2010s part 1 had early 2010s influences. Mid 2010s part 2 had late 2010s influences.

Yeah... The more I think about it, I found out that there really are 2 faces of each era:
Early 2010s Part 1: Fall 2009 to Spring 2011
Early 2010s Part 2: Spring 2011 to Summer/Fall 2013ish
Mid 2010s Part 1: Fall 2013 to Summer 2015
Mid 2010s Part 2: Summer 2015 to Summer/Fall 2016
Late 2010s Part 1: Fall 2016 to either Winter 2018/19 or Spring 2019
True Late 2010s Part 2: Spring 2019- Its complicated...

I think the 2010s part 2 started around late 2018 when TikTok, Billie Eillish, and Airpods started becoming popular. It was a contrast from the "Soundcloud/Emo trap, Cardi B, Tidepod and fidget spinner" late 2010s vibe

I was also gonna say late 2018 began late 2010s part 2 as that’s also when core 2010s influences died out. Part 1 late 2010s could range from 2017-mid 2018. Part 2 late 2010s could range from late 2018-early 2020.

mid 2010s is Late 2013 to the end of Pokemon go in summer 2016 We’re saying that the mid 2010s were split in 2015. The 1st part went from September 2013-May 2015. The 2nd part went from June 2015-2016. The mid 2010s identity was solid by spring 2013 imo. 95-97 percent there by November 2012 to March 2013. I would divide it as April/May 2013 to Feb/March 2015. Second half is April/May 2015 to Jan/Feb 2017

Not really, September 2013 is a good starting point of the solid mid 2010s. Late 2012/early 2013 still felt more early 2010s than mid. GTA 5 was released, the IOS got a fresh makeover, Royals was the #1 song, and Vine was the #1 app.

GTA 5 was released, the IOS got a fresh makeover, Royals was the #1 song, and Vine was the #1 app. Late 2012/2013 was an transitional early 2010s year that was pretty much very strongly leaning and culturally very very mid 2010s until spring when the change was more fully felt mostly in overall fashion, vibe, music and tech rather than a few new things imo. It wasn’t a big change like I said in another post, everything was mostly established across 2009-2012 and already strongly leaning towards mid 2010s by very late 12 and especially by a few months into 2013. I don’t remember anything happening overnight in September 2013. There may have been an IOS upgrade but the latest iPhones and interfaces between late 2012 and late 2013 were mostly the same from memory. A huge chunk of people were buying smartphones from late 2012 and mid 2013 in late 2013.

I'm not a fan of dividing eras into two parts. Eras naturally change over time as trends come and go, and I think it's just easier to say that the period of time between late 2009-early 2013 was one long era.

So, I guess 2010 was when electropop and club music was in full swing and 2012 had a variety of indie pop, EDM, and electropop.

Music in 2010 was more like 2008 while music in 2012 was more like 2015. If it wasn't for the electropop holdovers in 2012, I think more people would classify that year more with the mid '10s than the early.
