In no particular order: 1992-1995 - Clinton replaces H.W Bush as president - Windows 95 comes out in late 1995 - 1992 has 16-bit gaming while the PS1 and N64 debut and so does 3D gaming by 1995 - Some noticeable, although rare, Y2K influences pop up in 1995 as opposed to virtually none in 1992 - East Coast vs West Coast Hip Hop rivalry was in full swing in 1995 while gangsta rap was still in its early phase in 1992 - 80s influences completely gone by 1995 unlike in 1992 which had some noticeable holdovers 2018-2021 - Biden replaces Trump as president - Brexit officially happens by 2021 but wasn’t official in 2018 - Hipster fashion still lingered in 2018 while a more Gen Z fashion identity is starting to take over in 2021 - 2018 is pre-Covid while in 2021 we are still dealing with the virus but we have the vaccine - More new artist have gotten more popular since 2018 such Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, Lizzo, Billie Eillish, Roddy Ricch, Olivia Rodrigo, etc. - Music is more upbeat and melodic in 2021 and trap influences are slowly fading although still present and noticeable - Big movie releases are on streaming services (which we have way more of) in 2021 unlike 2018 2006-2009 - Obama replaces George Bush as president - Apple had released multiple iPhones by 2009. No iPhones existed in 2006 - MySpace was the most popular social media in 2006 while Facebook replaces it by 2009 - 2006 is peak 2000s while 2009 is still culturally late 00s but has early 10s elements creeping in - Modern Family, Glee, Breaking Bad, and other shows that would be popular in the early 2010s are on air in 2009 while 2006 had Malcom in the Middle, That 70s Show, Drake & Josh, etc. - Electropop is on the charts in 2009 unlike 2006 - Drake, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and Nicki Minaj are all becoming popular in 2009 unlike in 2006 which had core 00s artists like Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo, Kelly Clarkson, Timbaland, etc. - Skinny jeans and hipster fashion start to become popular in 2009 unlike jm 2006 Idk, 1995 was by far dominated by 16-bit gaming still, the SNES was king that year. I guess 3D gaming in the arcades was a change. Also skinny jeans and Hipster fashion was already a pretty common sight in 2006 (contrary to belief).

This. People here seem to dismiss everything else in favour of the sound of pop music (like 2018 and 2021), and overexagerate the differences of others based on the difference of pop music (like 2004 and late 2006/2007). Late 2006 tho had a ton of shifts not just music such as Facebook becoming public and the launch of ps3 and wii. Also democrats taking the house. The shift obv was not as big as 2001 and 2008. IMO 2020 was definitely a shift on the level of 2001 or 2008. 2016 was big too, but not as much. That said, 2018 and 2021 is definitely a big shift for 3 years. Even in pop music, 2018 was the last year where EDM pop was big, and it was the peak year of that tattoo-face rainbow hair SoundCloud rapper craze (which started in 2016) before it started dying out in 2019. Even 2019 with "Old Town Road" feels kinda old now. TikTok was just starting in like September of 2018 before blowing up in 2019, and look at the pop cultural force it has now in 2021. It's crazy how huge it got in less than 3 years. And I mean, besides from that stuff, which is a pretty big change already, there's been a global pandemic for a year as of 2021 which wasn't even heard of in 2018, and there's a new president.

Yes, 1995 was still mostly in the 16-bit era but i would say the fact that 64-bit gaming had existed and was known at that time is enough to differentiate it from 1992, even if most people still had 16-bit consoles.

I am going to go a step further and say 2020's shift was bigger then 2001 and 2008. Music did change /was changing in 2019 before 2020 hit we just didn't notice it, kind of like in 2001 we noticed it but it was gradual. However the covid-19 pandemic obviously halted some pop culture as movies did not come out and some went to streaming like HBO max. The movie slate for 2021 -2022 is going to be really good

For post-1970: One I can def think of is 1991 & 1994. MAYBE 1994 and 1997, not quite sure there... The 70s and 80s on the otherhand don't have any three year gaps that seem that huge tbh. The 2000s do, I was thinking 2002 and 2005 actually (technology saw a huge shift and there was enough cultural & political change to back it up too). The 2010s, not really any that pop up on the top of my mind. 1991 and late 1994 are quite different but not too different, late 1994 had both the first substantial incoming late 90s culture making its mark but also some leftover early 90s stuff coexisting and continuing on alongside. Mid to late 1991 and early 1994 were similar, despite more mid 90s modifications around late 92-late 93. Late 1994 and late 1997 were a bit different despite some lasting connections until early 1998. Late 1994 and early 1997 weren’t exactly similar but not too different, I would say similar in a large numbers of ways but slightly separated because of a few stronger late 90s shifts that occurred in mid to late 96. Early 1994 fits in more with late 1992 & 1993. 1994 and 1997, I'm not too sure about but, those two years definitely felt very different from each other but, I don't think it was as big as 1991 to 1994. That's just what I think though.

Late 1997 was almost pure late 90s, with strong core connections with some incoming y2k elements and some mid 90s things left. 1991 was similar in a number of ways to 1994-1995 but essentially a different era, 1994-1995 just had really solid mid 90s culture, some of which was was strongly connected or similar to the early 90s. Also a lot things from 1991 were still going strong despite some degree of super early incoming late 90s culture first making it mark or overtaking the old and blending into the period.

Interesting how it was just pretty much yesterday when people stopped saying that today's music sounded just like it did 2019. Maybe the 2020s are coming into their own and that we’re just starting to notice it. I remember mc98 predicted that we’d get the first taste of 2020s culture around spring 2021 which is right about now. I been saying this for the last 2 years in my prediction threads, I even did a fashion forecast + Music as well. The thing with shifts if they are gradual or big you still really don't get the scope of things until either A) The transition is over or B) the transition is close to being over. I compare it to a video game like GTA III on ps2 that has crappy draw distance and you can't see whats up ahead. However put that same game in a PC computer where the draw distance is better say a PC port and you can see things more clearly, you can see the whole map. Makes you go AHH now I see the events that led up to this change and how things are the way they are. But like I said not everyone is going to see the motion of things until after the transition has concluded. When I worked for E! news channel I used to do these trends reports back in the 2010s for the cast.

You can tell when a shift is about to happen or is occurring. Maybe we’re in the false early 2020s era right now since around March 2020. This era might end around August-October 2021 when the real early 2020s kick in. Late 2010s influences are prevalent, but they’re slowly dying or the early 2020s influences are weeding them out. As unpopular as this sounds, 2019 and maybe 2020 are the last years to lean late 2010s, but 2021 is the first year to lean early 2020s even if we’re barely removed from the late 2010s. I like your analogy comparing GTA ||| on PS2 to the same game on a PC. That makes perfect sense. Maybe the vibe will be more clear to people around late 2021 at start of the 2021-2022 school year.

Kind of the same thing that happened in 2001. Vaccinations are going up which is a good sign so we might be out of the woods soon. It is too soon to tell because there are mutant variants of the virus. Back in 2001 I was not aware of what shifts were, but I knew even before 9/11 happened something in the air was different, I felt the same in February/March of 2008. It just didn't know it was shift because at that age the only shifts I had seen with my eyes are the early 90s shift, the mid 90s to y2k era shift. So I didn't have much to compare it to. As time went out I became more aware of these "shifts" and know when to pay attention if something is giving you that vibe.

1966 to 1969, 1996 to 1999, 2005 to 2008, 2014 to 2017, 2018 to 2021 all have pretty stark contrasts to me, honestly. They're pretty different from one another.

I trust you on those. 😅 Early 2020s culture is slowly solidifying even if the change from late 2010s isn’t as drastic as the change from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. The 2000s saw a gradual fading out of late 1990s influences which weren’t obsolete until the second half of 2004. Early 2000s culture began by late 2001. The 2020s might follow a similar trajectory, although I predict late 2010s influences will be eradicated by 2023. 2020 reminded me of 2000. 2021 so far reminds me of 2001. The Disney store closures this spring are reminiscent of Warner Bros mall stores closing in summer 2001. Plus we got a new president in 2021 like we did in 2001, except this time it’s a democrat. PS2 got hot by late 2001. So who knows, the PS5 might get hot by late 2021 officially kicking off 9th generation gaming. 5G is also being rolled out now, so the Internet is also experiencing a transition. I’m unsure about electric cars or Virtual Reality, but they exist. I don’t think COVID will be gone by late 2021 as the vaccines just started rolling out now. I predict COVID will be history by 2023. 2021 is better than 2020 in my opinion, not only because of starting university, but also because we have a sane president and COVID vaccines are making a positive impact. It’s interesting reading about your experiences.

I actually have pictures of some of the stuff I bought in those 5 weeks. I remember the night after the 2001 VMAS everyone in school was saying Britney is so edgy now, Teen pop crap is done etc etc ( even tho had been fading out way before September 2001) The whole mood the week before 9/11 was already a breath of fresh air. I was sure to soak in every bit of it. By 2023 I think the mask mandate will be gone from stores, and you are right just because the vac gets rolled out you have to get at least 89% of people in the world getting to be more relaxed. We are getting there (USA wise) but it is not going to be done in a day. 2023 sounds about right. By then the mid 2020s will be here...........imagine that And wow my typing in that other paragraph above was so OFF LOL!!!

We get to see what was going on in your mind when the changes were happening or solidifying live during back to school 2001. Britney abandoned her cookie-cutter, goody two shoes, innocent, princess, kiddy, girl next door image for a more real, mature, sexual, raunchy, bad ass, no more nice girl, edgy, adult, in your face persona. I wonder if that's one of the many reasons why Justin Timberlake dumped her in 2002. Britney admitted she wanted full control over her Britney album which seemed like a transitional album. She wanted it to reflect her. Honestly, her 2001 and later albums reflect her better than the 1999 and 2000 albums where she sounded like she was forced to be someone who she wasn't. I remember more singles from her 2001 and later albums than from her 1999 and 2000 albums. She was 19 when she performed at the 2001 VMA's. She looked like a grown woman on that stage. I would've never guessed she was 19. She looked to be in her mid 20s like around 24 or 25. I bet "I'm a Slave 4 U" shocked people. They weren't used to that side of her. It seemed cutting edge at the time. I'm sure it caused controversy, which probably made pop culture more interesting. Teenagers wanted to be like her, but the adults were against that. The 2000s were a conservative decade, so the pop culture of that era offered escapism and was a counterculture to the traditional mindset in society. Christina Aguilera was already transitioning throughout 2001 to Xtina. That process was complete by the time her "Stripped" album debuted in late 2002 or the first singles were released prior. Thank you for agreeing with me. It's crazy that in almost 2 years the mid 2020s will start numerically. Culturally that probably won't be until late 2023 or sometime in 2024. LMAO I thought you meant by fall 2021, the transition will be 100% complete or that's when we'd realize it. I've noticed that fall is when new cultural eras and transitions begin which lasts through the summer of next year. Of course there's some exceptions to that. basically what happened is she cheated on him with one of her dancers ( who turned out to be one of the MJ accusers from that HBO doc) Justin's cry me a river is based on what happened. But he took it a little too far because every interview he did clocked her. Later she got revenge with the everytime Music video and clapped back. As far as pop culture yeah she did make it better by changing her sound, the only thing that sucked is she bamboozled Clear Channel using Pepsi to sponsor her tour so most radio stations owned by clear channel started blacklisting her by not playing her music. Luckily........ MTV did play her music non stop as well as MTV 2 (which had just been added to MAJOR satellite and over the air feeds) people forget MTV was king back then. So it made it's impact on pop culture history. 0 radio support for slave but 100% support on MTV & MTV 2. you can read more about it here
