Just take a look
It's mostly pop, very little trap now.
I think this week is also the first time the Billboard Top 10 was only pop and no trap in like 7 years...
It's too early to say trap is dead I would say, but given this, we can safely say by the end of the year trap will completely fall off the grid easily... It is almost completely dead in the mainstream. This is a big sign for a change in pop culture and it's a very positive thing.

Good, now all we need is the hip-hop equivalent of grunge to become popular and we're set

Good, now all we need is the hip-hop equivalent of grunge to become popular and we're set I hope it's Drill. It's kinda quiet on the charts right now and needs to come back. Also, I kinda like the melodic direction trap is moving right now and hope it stays for a little longer. Stuff like "RAPSTAR", "Rockstar", "Lemonade"...

You know it's quite telling that the new Post Malone track is not doing as good as his previous songs because I think many people are sick of that type of sound. To be fair, Motley Crew is not the lead single for his next album.

Pop music is now the most diverse it's been in several years, and that's definitely a welcoming change. And it looks like my prediction for dark/minimalist trap dying by late 2021/early 2022 could be ringing true.

His light and lush pop rock and trap style works better ("Circles", "Goodbyes", etc) for him imo.

Trap needs to go but I dislike bedroom pop more. I'm not sure what to call the style of hip-hop I like the most. It has to have a prominent bass line and high BPM. Is this trap?

Trap just needs to move towards that dancy, bouncy sound that some of the most popular songs are embarrassing lately. Artists that are trying to keep that dark SoundCloud sound from 2017 alive are clearly heading towards a wall.

How do you make these predictions? When do you see trap fully dying out?

Most charting trap since 2020 has been exactly what you're talking about.

I don't see any edm in the charts either, like 0 songs I do not see either EDM in the charts either. I think EDM has been dead since late 2018 or 2019. The charts are mostly pop punk, country, pop, some 2020 holdover songs and little trap.

This kinda makes me sad. *Melodic* Trap, Drill and R&B are the only genres right now that interest me.
Throwback music is so long-in-the-tooth.

I do not care about throwback pop and country. You are right. Throwback music is so long in the tooth. Of course throwback music has been around forever, but it was all encompassing in the 2010s with Bruno Mars, Goyte, etc. I would rather the 2020s have their unique sounds instead of rehashing past decade sounds. All I pray is that ringtone and snap rap stays in the second half of the 2000s where they belong.
