1998 was the true year of change. 1999 was the first cultural 2000s year. I strongly disagree with those who say 2001 was. I'm 1998, that's when everything changed and the cultural '90s ended.

No it wasn't lol this is wrong on so many levels
Why 2001 is more changeful than 1998
- 9/11
- Death of Teen Pop
- Launch of Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings movie franchises
- Launch of Fast & The Furious franchise ( Car racing became super popular after)
- Launching of Xbox and Nintendo Gamecube ( kicking off 6th gen systems)
- Debut of Grand Theft Auto 3
- Debut of Bling
- Debut of Michelle Branch and Shakira
- Garage Rock blows up ( White Stripes)
- Sega ends as video game manufacturer in Q1 2001
- WCW is bought out by WWF
- Y2K fonts start to fall out of favor in commercials
- Fox Kids is bought out by Disney and enters an agreement to end programming the following year
- MJ returns to the NBA
- Debut of the Game Boy Advance
- Halo debuts
- Debut of Yugioh fad
- Debut of Adult Swim
While I agree 1998 killed off a ton of 90s things and closed a chapter, way more more stuff happened in 2001
to cultivate change

Agree with John Titor. 1998 was changeful in certain aspects (especially technology and gaming), but 2001 was changeful to an unprecedented degree in literally EVERY SINGLE WAY IMAGINABLE.
There are so many big things JT didn't bring up that happened in 2001.
There's a lot of shifts I think were overrated and aren't that big that get brought up a lot in decadeology forums, but 2001 is one year that I not only think really was as changeful as people say it is, I think people actually UNDERESTIMATE it.

If the internet became much more accessible then, I agree. I would say the biggest shift as far as the internet is concerned in 1998 was the fact that Google came out, but it didn't blow up overnight. Lots of people still used other search engines like Yahoo and Ask Jeeves during this time. Otherwise, as far as the internet becoming big, I'd say years like 1993 (Eternal September, Mosaic comes out), 1995 (internet becomes commercialized, Windows 95, GeoCities launches, Netscape takes off), and 1996 (Internet Explorer takes off, web hosting sites become popular, MANY companies launch websites) were far more important to the internet becoming a big thing.

If the internet became much more accessible then, I agree. It did. People will say it didn't, but I lived through then and saw it. My family was not wealthy at all. We were poor immigrants. And even we got the internet in 1998..

People theoretically could as early as 1993/1994, when most ISPs started providing World Wide Web access.

Was a huge year.
