If the internet became much more accessible then, I agree. It did. People will say it didn't, but I lived through then and saw it. My family was not wealthy at all. We were poor immigrants. And even we got the internet in 1998.. I lived thru it as well and yes there were more people that got internet in 1998, but it pales in comparison to the 2000s adoption rates, esp 2004 and the bubble burst of mid 2000.

There also wasn't any noticeable shift regarding the internet itself. Not everyone had the internet in 1998. I'm much more interested in when it really became a part of pop culture, and from my research, it was roughly 1995/1996. by 2000 everyone used the internet even if you didnt have dial up at home, but by 2004-2005 school year almost everyone had a computer at home and was mandatory for school, you could get away without one but with aol AIM and myspace it made it must have.

The only thing 9/11 changed in 2001 was more enhanced security in airports, the war and new attitudes because of the event, and a slight change in pop culture and music towards more of a punk mid/core '00s feel rather than bubblegum pop (though it wasn't fully mid 2000s until 2003, in 2001 the shift started though). But this was nowhere near as big as the shift of 1998 which brought in true 2000s culture.

Teen pop was still big. The internet was still a novelty. Windows 9x and Classic Mac OS defined computer operating systems. Bill Clinton was still president. We were still in the 5th gen of gaming. 1998 was a shift for pop music, but rock and rap were still similar to 1997. 1999 was the REAL shift for both genres, due to nu metal and pop punk blowing up for the former, and Eminem entering the scene for the latter.

But this was nowhere near as big as the shift of 1998 which brought in true 2000s culture. eh in 1997 all the things that you think of Y2K were there by 1997, arguably late 97 is the first y2k year - Y2K fonts and Y2k designs start appearing in media - Frosted tips take off - Sonic gets his redesign from Sonic Adventure early - TRL on MTV debuts as MTV LIVE - Teen Pop starts to take over with Spice girls - PS1 overtakes Nintendo 64 in popularity - JRPG explosion - Digital Pet explosion ( Digimon/Tamagotchi) - Shiny Suit rap blows up - Seinfeld has a Y2K bug episode

I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that the 2000s started with 9/11. The 2000s started with Y2K. The Y2K era was INSANELY different from the 1990s and anything before 1999/1998.

Like GTA wasn’t big in 2000 for example, but neither was Doom. 1997-mid 2001 is pretty much its own thing honestly.

And no I do not agree with you John Titor that 1999 was a cultural 90s year. The shift began in 1998. 1999 is definitely a cultural 2000s YEAR.
