It makes sense since 2020 was such a massive shift. People overlook 2019 since we all know 2020 was the big shift year. But a lot of these changes actually started in 2019. Covid-19 started in 2019 in China, throwback pop albums (Weeknd, Dua Lipa) got released late 2019, The Mandolorean was out in late 2019, Tik Tok exploded in 2019, Billie Eilish got popular in summer 2019, and other little things where it felt like change was in the air as early as 2019.

Covid had 0 impact over 2019's culture, it was literally reported to the WHO in December the 31st lol.
Aside from that, yes, 2019 was a very changeful year... Alongside 2009, 1999 and 1989 and every "9" ending year ever since 1969

On one hand, 2019 was setting up a 2020s that we'll never get to experience. Covid and the Trump economic crash has pretty much ended the old world in a similar way to how the 1929 stock market crash and Great Depression ended the roaring twenties. On the other hand, it was an appropriate finale to the 2010s.

I do agree that there was some sort of mini-shift in 2019 that made it seem a bit different from 2017. I would call it the epilogue of the 2010s.

Personally I would call it minor connections that weren’t really felt in 2019 as hints of a new era at all. I wouldn’t call them substantial enough to constitute a shift well. How do you see if this way? Also 1989, 1999, 2009 at some point all had enough radical departures and substantial foreign and new era pop culture from the stereotypical and core decade identity they were in.

Pretty much an epilogue

Nowadays, people call those alt-girls alt-boys. Basically an updated name for them.

2019 was a prologue to the 2020s and an epilogue of the 2010s lol 100% it's as almost as if things were too boring and too calm, I think I even made that comment in early 2019

New faces of pop like Billie and Lil Nas X, tiktok changing the music industry

2019 was both an epilogue year for the 2010s and part of what the early 2020s might've been like with TikTok and artists like Doja Cat and Billie Eilish blowing up but no pandemic

I've noticed that a lot with 2020 actually but you're right a lot of well-known 2010s shows like Game of Thrones for example ended in 2019. The Star Wars sequel trilogy also ended in 2019 as John said.

I still think people overestimate the depth of the connections. Every point mentioned about what came around in 19 so far is valid but that still means 2019 just had mostly a small handful of connections or endpoints, not a real shift and not a pop culture change that was felt. 2019 is still mostly similar today and there wasn’t a new era feeling or final chapter feeling in 2019 early, mid or late imo. 2018-2019 had a bit more visible leftover dying core residue from 12-17 that’s about it.
Honestly we still haven’t moved into a different era. 2019 is still mostly similar/same era with a few minor starting points or noteworthy happenings that are related to certain aspects of today, even though they never formed a cohesive shift or new era feeling. The most mini changes are from mid to late 2020 with some more visible ones and some minor distance felt from the 2010s, starting around the late spring-fall 2021 but even they still aren’t enough yet.
