1998 was not substantially different from 1997 with the exception of Britney Spears starting her career, nu metal becoming popular, and the iMac launching, and even the latter two events can be traced to stuff that happened in 1997. Sure 1998-2000 is quite a ways different from 1994-1995. It is very different from the core 90s…but it is even more different from the core 00s. The 2000s started in late 1998.

It began the Y2K era which is transitional between the 90s and 2000s. The 2000s proper started in late 2001. Although I would argue Y2K influence began in late 1996, and ended in early 2003. These are just my takes, and you don't have to agree.

2000 ? That year had plenty of things in common with 1997-1999 in terms of aesthetic and vibe. I don’t think you understood they’re position. 1998 and 1999 are 2000s years. Ayes, 1998 the year with so many quintessentially 2000s sounding songs: Definitely tons of 00s vibes from these

2000 - 2005 was the pure 2000s. 2006 onwards was the modern 2000s, which was no longer the core 2000s. 2006 is definitely NOT pure 2000s.
I would add 1999 as being part of the cultural core 2000s, but I know that would make a lot of people upset so I'll leave 1999 out.

If you serious think 2006 was a pure 2000s year you must be very young since everyone knew the vibe changed that year. There were ZERO '90s elements in 2000. That first half of the decade was the real pure 2000s, plain and simple. If you are 27 and older you would understand that.

It makes me so mad when people call 2006 a quintessential 2000s year. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Sexy Back was one of the most popular songs that year, for example.

going to chime in here, was in 4th grade during the 97/98 school year
it felt nothing like the 2000s despite Y2K taking off, The 2000s like the 2000s 2000s started in last week of August 2001. That is when it felt like the 2000s.

And John Titor is in her thirties, and she can tell you how wrong you are. Plus, 2007 was more changeful in my honest opinion than 2006 was.

Maybe you're too young to remember. Maybe you should re-read my post and point to me where I said that the year 2000 was exactly alike years prior to it as I only mentioned the Late 90s because many artists and fashion styles including Presidents of were only focusing on the US were the same. I don’t get why you always think on the site and the last one prior to it that your word is the absolute truth. We all have different opinions here and the Y2K era spanned 2 decades both the 90s and 2000s, Just from watching old TV news broadcasts the Y2K bug was a much bigger deal in 1999 then in the years the followed and last time I checked the calendar 1999 is a 90s year. The Y2K bug scare was what defined the era because it was so hyper focused on futuristic technology destroying society if it malfunctioned because of to much dependence on it.

It wasn't just artists, it's also video games that make 2000 similar to late 1996-1999, rather than 2001 onwards. The Y2K era is also defined as being the transition between the 90s and 00s. Not "OMG it's the 90s or 00s". Like it's not particularly similar to the core 90s or core 00s. It's its own thing.
